In 2022, Petro stopped to speak to a grandmother and her baby granddaughter, Lydia, who was undergoing treatment for leukaemia outside a Centurion hospital. The encounter stayed with her and inspired her to join the stem cell donor registry.

Months later, Petro was identified as a donor match for a young patient in need of a lifesaving stem cell transplant.  It was only after the confidentiality period had ended that she discovered the recipient was Lydia, the very same little girl who had inspired her to register.

Today, Lydia is four years old, thriving and has not been readmitted to hospital since her transplant. We speak to Petro and Estelle.
