The School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape office of the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef), is hosting a webinar on October 18 to launch the Makhanda Declaration. This initiative aims to revitalize journalism in South Africa. The event coincides with SA Media Freedom Day on October 19, commemorating the 1977 Black Wednesday, when the apartheid regime banned the World and Sunday World newspapers and imprisoned several anti-apartheid journalists. The Makhanda Declaration reaffirms the goals of the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which highlighted the significance of journalism in Africa. Thabiso Tema spoke with Rhodes University head of Journalism and Media Studies, Jeanne du Toit.
