Government intervention delays SA Rugby’s crucial meeting over private equity deal

View descriptionShare

SA Rugby planned to sell a 20% stake in a new commercial-rights company for $75 million to Seattle-based Ackerley Sports Group LLC. However, the organization postponed the vote after a request from South African Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie for more government briefings on the proposal, without providing a new date for the ballot. This deal aims to leverage the Springboks' recent successes, having won the last two Rugby World Cups and the Southern Hemisphere’s Rugby Championship last month. Thabiso Tema spoke with Sports Business Analyst Sgwili Gumede.
