On World Brain Day, July 22, 2024, the Neurological Association of South Africa highlights the preventable nature of neurological disorders, which are the leading cause of disability and second leading cause of death globally.
Despite being preventable, up to 80% of strokes, 40% of dementia cases, and 25% of epilepsies occur, with low-to-middle-income countries bearing the brunt.
In South Africa, epilepsy, strokes, and dementia are prevalent, with limited access to neurologists, medication, and preventative care.
Experts emphasize the importance of early detection, effective management, and lifestyle choices to protect brain health, which is essential for cognitive, emotional, and social skills.
We speak to Dr Heena Narotam, member of the Neurological Association of South Africa.
