Before Facebook and Twitter became a thing, there was radio.
Radio Freedom was a South African radio arm of the African National Congress and its fighting wing Umkhonto we Sizwe during the anti-Apartheid struggle from the 1970s through the 1990s.
It was the oldest liberation radio station in Africa.Recently, former Radio Freedom presenter Golden Neswiswi and his Netherlands counterpart Fulton van Aurich, handed over a valuable Radio Freedom recording that was recorded during apartheid in the Netherlands.
The album consists of clips from Radio Freedom broadcasts, such as the opening and closing signature tunes, commentaries, a youth programme on the tricameral elections (drama), Dawn Breaks, a women’s programme, revolutionary songs and a call by the ANC for the people of South Africa to make the country ungovernable amongst others.
We spoke to former Radio Freedom presenter, Golden Neswiswi.
