30 years of Democracy: The two caricatures

View descriptionShare

There is alot of reflections happening in different sectors of South Africa. Many are pondering on the question of whether South Africa has made progress since the advent of its democracy.

One of those is Sivuyile Sitole,  is the Kagisano Programme Officer at Afesis. Kagisano is a program aimed at building social cohesion and preventing collective in selected communities and schools across South Africa.

Sivuyile says that for us to understand the progress of South Africa’s thirty-year-old democracy, we need to view it through the eyes of two caricatures:  a country bumpkin from the hinterland, and a kleva from the township, with the former living in a rondavel and the latter in a shack.
