There are further fears over a lack of resources during weekdays at Sligo University Hospital should the current plan for weekend rostering be introduced.
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and the HSE want more flexible rostering to ease crowded emergency departments and cut waiting lists,
It's thought a modern health service needs to operate six or seven days a week to match patient need.
However last week the Irish Hospital Consultants Association warned that forcing consultants onto Saturday rosters without proper support services is bordering on “clinical and economic insanity”.
Speaking to Ocean FM news, Dr John Kelly - Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sligo University Hospital and IHCA member says there must be an increase in overall resources in order for weekend rostering to work in Sligo and elsewhere:
