A Sligo Councillor says the government are continuing to sleep walk into a major winter of discontent.

Sligo Councillor Ann Higgins made the claims as the likelihood public-service strikes loom large.

Already SIPTU and FORSA public sector members have expressed their dissatisfaction over the government's failure to engage with the sector on pay talks.

The Labour party spokesperson says the counter argument of global instability dedicating that this is not a time to enter into such negotiations does not wash.

Sligo Cllr accuses Government of sleepwalking into winter of discontent

There's renewed concern over a proposed extension to McCaffertys Bar in Donegal Town.

It comes as a planning application has been resubmitted after the one lodged earlier this year was deemed invalid. 
The proposal could see the conversion of a former bookmakers and dwelling on Quay Street. 

The initial application sparked major fears locally over the future of Donegal Towns landscape.

There are further fears over a lack of resources during weekdays at Sligo University Hospital should the current plan for weekend rostering be introduced. 

Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and the HSE want more flexible rostering to ease crowded emergency departments and cut waiting lists, 

It's thought a modern health service needs to operate six or seven days a week to match patient need.

However last week the Irish Hospital Consultants Association warned that forcing consultants onto Saturday rosters without proper support services is bordering on “clinical and economic insanity”.

Speaking to Ocean FM news, Dr John Kelly - Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sligo University Hospital and IHCA member says there must be an increase in overall resources in order for weekend rostering to work in Sligo and elsewhere:

A Sligo Leitrim Deputy is warning that latest changes to the Passport legislation will increased the work load on Department officials responsible for issuing new or renewing passports.

Deputy Eamon Scanlon issued the update as Visitors to the UK from Ireland will require a passport from the end of the month to enter the country.

Irish Ferries and Stena Line say the change is to endure compliance with border force requirements.

The Fianna Fáil TD says it's vital that those intending on travelling allow plenty of time to allow for passport issues to be resolved.
