Saturday September 18, 1999 — A momentous day in Victoria's history. A day where football and politics collided and what unfolded was impossible to comprehend.

But the Blues stunning win over rival and red-hot premiership favourite Essendon was only part of the reason why that day remains one of the most remarkable and remembered days in Victoria's modern history. Because an even wilder shock was emerging in the other ‘divisive’ game that stirs the state’s passions - politics. 

Like the Blues - the relatively unknown Labor Leader Steve Bracks was pitted against a powerhouse - the Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett.

In this episode - how Carlton pulled off one of football's great heists against a formidable Essendon side.

Carlton (Part 2): The Great Heist

The Blues were a foundation member of the VFL and won 8 flags in the competition's first 50 years. After a 21-year drought - the club would became a force again - following the arrival of the legendary Ron Barassi in 1968. A further 7 premierships would follow up until 1987…often on the back of big name recruits and an even bigger chequebook.

For a powerful club, the sight of Carlton languishing at the bottom of the ladder was not a common sight during the 70s and 80s, but come the ‘90s that’s exactly where the Blues found themselves. 

In this episode - the story behind legendary coach David Parkin relinquishing control as the players took control and how Carlton built a premiership-winning machine off the back of disappoints in '93 and '94.

Under legendary coach Tom Hafey, Richmond won 4 premierships between 1967 and 1974. There would be another flag in 1980, but in a sign of things to come coach Tony Jewell was sacked 18 months later, with his replacement Francis Bourke suffering the same fate despite making the 1982 Grand Final. By the start of the 90’s the once powerful Tigers were wounded, almost fatally.

In this episode - how their Skins were narrowly Saved, the never-ending coaching merry-go-round at Punt Road — and the thrills and spills of the wild ride of 1995.
