But the Blues stunning win over rival and red-hot premiership favourite Essendon was only part of the reason why that day remains one of the most remarkable and remembered days in Victoria's modern history. Because an even wilder shock was emerging in the other ‘divisive’ game that stirs the state’s passions - politics. 

Like the Blues - the relatively unknown Labor Leader Steve Bracks was pitted against a powerhouse - the Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett.
