STORY 1:   Walker’s Incoming Commission Chair Seeking Public Feedback

Angie Teems, the incoming chair for the Walker County Commission, plans to hold public forums to gather community input as she prepares to lead the county starting in January. Her priorities include addressing unfilled county positions, reducing or eliminating the fire fee, tackling crime in northern areas, and revitalizing blighted properties like the old Coats American building. Teems aims to enhance family-friendly spaces, parks, and tourist attractions, and is interested in creating venues for events. She also wants to support senior citizens, veterans, and youth through programs and improve county operations with better policies and communication. Teems emphasizes the importance of community engagement and making Walker County a desirable place to live and visit.

STORY 2:   CHS Class of 2024 Outperforms State and National SAT Average

Calhoun High School's Class of 2024 has excelled on the SAT, surpassing both national and state averages, highlighting the dedication of students, faculty, and the community to academic excellence. Their average score exceeded Georgia's public-school performance, which has outpaced the national average for seven years. Principal Casey Parker praised the graduates' achievements as a testament to the school's commitment to student success. State School Superintendent Richard Woods commended the ongoing efforts in Georgia to enhance academic recovery and opportunities, contributing to students' strong performance on standardized tests.

STORY 3:  Floyd County And Rome City Schools Saw Growth In Math

Students in Floyd County and Rome City schools showed significant growth in math proficiency according to the latest Georgia Milestone Scores. Floyd County achieved its highest math scores ever, with notable improvements in sixth grade (13% increase), third grade, high school Algebra (both 10% increase), and eighth grade (9% increase). Rome City schools also saw improvements, particularly in high school Algebra and third grade (10% growth each), and eighth grade (6% growth). Despite a slight decline in seventh-grade scores, both districts celebrated overall progress. Statewide, Georgia students improved, with an 8% increase in eighth-grade math and high school Algebra scores.
