STORY 2: Floyd County Schools in Talks to Add K9s to Schools

Floyd County school officials are considering adding firearm and vape-detecting police dogs to enhance school safety. In collaboration with Global K9 and the Floyd County Police Department, the plan involves deploying two K9s—one for detecting vapes and another for firearms. This initiative follows updated safety protocols after a recent school shooting, which also included hiring more school resource officers (SROs) to ensure at least two per school. These SROs, along with off-duty county police officers, will patrol all school levels to maintain safety throughout the school year.



STORY 3:S.C. Man Sentenced for Sending Fentanyl Pills to Chickamauga

A South Carolina man, Onesepherous L. Grissette, pleaded guilty to sending over 4,500 fentanyl-laced pills to Chickamauga, Georgia. He was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison, plus ten years of probation. The case highlights the ongoing threat of counterfeit pills and fentanyl, which have claimed many lives. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, aided by local drug task forces, intercepted the shipments intended for Jeremy Newman, who paid Grissette approximately $85,000 over nearly two years. Authorities emphasize their commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring community safety.

The Rome City Schools Parent Resource Center has begun offering classes for parents and expecting parents to support their children's learning. Initially focused on early literacy, the center has expanded to include math and social-emotional classes, taught by RCS literacy and math coaches. Classes are held twice a month, with childcare provided. Attendance has grown from a few parents to 20 per class. The center also supplies essential items like hygiene products, clothes, and school supplies, adapting to community needs. Families can visit the center for resources, aiming to support children's overall well-being and relieve stress.



STORY 2:Calhoun - Gordon County Adoption Events for "Barktober"

This fall, two adoption events are returning to Calhoun and Gordon County, hosted by Gordon County Animal Control and Calhoun Animal Control. "Barktober" at Gordon County Animal Control is on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring free adoptions, low-cost spay/neuter certificates, and a raffle. Donations of pet food earn raffle tickets. Simultaneously, Calhoun Animal Control's 11th annual Adoption Day and Open House runs from 1-4 p.m., offering shelter tours, adoptions, and vaccinations by Dr. John Gray's team. Adoption fees are $60, or $25 for altered animals.



STORY 3:Three GNTC Students Win Governor Deal Scholarship

Three Georgia Northwestern Technical College students, Conner Haynes, Angel Ramirez, and Parker Shepherd, have been awarded The Governor Nathan Deal Technical Education Scholarship for their academic excellence in the Welding and Joining Technology program at the Whitfield Murray Campus. Established by The Carpet and Rug Institute and supported by the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia, the scholarship honors former Gov. Nathan Deal's commitment to technical education. It supports students pursuing industrial programs, helping them succeed in the workforce. The scholarship underscores the carpet industry's dedication to workforce development in northwest Georgia.

STORY 4:Rome Commission Approves Purchase for Fire Department Facility

 The Rome City Commission has approved a $1.75 million purchase of land on Cedartown Highway for the Rome-Floyd Fire Department's new maintenance facility. Currently owned by Manco Logistics, the site offers ample space and four large maintenance bays, ideal for the department's needs. The current facility on North Avenue is too cramped, making vehicle maintenance challenging. Funded by a 2017 sales tax package, the new location will alleviate space issues and improve operations. The sale is expected to close in October, allowing time for setup and relocation of equipment.



STORY 5:City BOE Gives PFAS Update, Honors Scholars

At the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Michele Taylor updated on PFAS water filtration efforts, collaborating with Cyclopure to design custom filters for school water sources. The board approved several new business items, including a school nurse contract and surplus facility buses. The CTAE Perkins Program Improvement Budget was also approved, and AP scholar students were recognized. Upcoming events include CPS Spirit Night, a fall chorus concert, and homecoming activities. The next board meeting is scheduled for October 28.

STORY 6:Bethel Church Road Residents Oppose Chicken House Proposal

A change.org petition aims to stop the construction of commercial chicken houses on Bethel Church Road in Silver Creek. Residents voiced concerns at the Floyd County Commission meeting, prompting discussions on updating zoning codes. Currently, chicken houses are allowed in the Agricultural-Residential district without special permits. Concerns include road damage from heavy truck traffic, environmental impacts on a nearby stream, and quality of life issues. The commission acknowledged these concerns and is reviewing the ordinance, with some residents calling for a special use permit requirement for large poultry operations.



STORY 7:Rome and Floyd Schools Score Above State Average on SATs

 Floyd County and Rome City Schools surpassed state and national SAT averages by over 30 points in 2024. Rome City Schools scored a mean of 1064, 34 points above the state and 69 above the national average, ranking 22nd in Georgia. Floyd County Schools scored 1075, 45 points above the state and 80 above the national average, ranking 18th. Both districts attribute success to dedicated students and educators. Georgia's state average was 1030, 35 points above the national average of 995. Despite high scores, a slight decrease from 2023 is noted, attributed to increased participation.
