STORY 1:   AdventHealth Georgia Challenges Community to Light Porches Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Throughout October, AdventHealth cancer care teams are promoting the "Light Your Porch Pink" initiative in Northwest Georgia to raise breast cancer awareness. Community members are encouraged to install pink light bulbs on their porches, symbolizing support for early detection and treatment. Pink bulbs are available at various AdventHealth locations in Floyd, Gordon, and Murray counties. Participants are invited to share photos on social media using #PinkPorchGA. The campaign aims to inspire regular cancer screenings, with last year's event seeing widespread community participation. For more information or to schedule a mammogram, visit PinkPorchGA.com.

STORY 2: Floyd County Schools in Talks to Add K9s to Schools

Floyd County school officials are considering adding firearm and vape-detecting police dogs to enhance school safety. In collaboration with Global K9 and the Floyd County Police Department, the plan involves deploying two K9s—one for detecting vapes and another for firearms. This initiative follows updated safety protocols after a recent school shooting, which also included hiring more school resource officers (SROs) to ensure at least two per school. These SROs, along with off-duty county police officers, will patrol all school levels to maintain safety throughout the school year.

STORY 3:  S.C. Man Sentenced for Sending Fentanyl Pills to Chickamauga

A South Carolina man, Onesepherous L. Grissette, pleaded guilty to sending over 4,500 fentanyl-laced pills to Chickamauga, Georgia. He was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison, plus ten years of probation. The case highlights the ongoing threat of counterfeit pills and fentanyl, which have claimed many lives. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, aided by local drug task forces, intercepted the shipments intended for Jeremy Newman, who paid Grissette approximately $85,000 over nearly two years. Authorities emphasize their commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring community safety.

STORY 4:  Hamilton to Host Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness

Vitruvian Health will host a Pink Day event on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burr Park in Dalton to promote breast cancer awareness. The event features free cookies, pink lemonade, giveaways, and health vendors. At noon, Dr. Lisa Duhaime will discuss the importance of early breast cancer detection. Attendees are encouraged to practice regular self-exams and mammograms. The event also highlights healthy habits to reduce breast cancer risk. Free car magnets and yard signs are available throughout October at Vitruvian Health locations. For mammograms, contact Peeples Cancer Institute at 706-272-6565.

STORY 5:     DOJ: Ga. Prisons Are Systematically Violating Civil Rights of Inmates

The U.S. Department of Justice released a report criticizing the Georgia Department of Corrections for violating prisoners' constitutional rights and being indifferent to unsafe conditions. The investigation, which included visits to 17 facilities like Hays State Prison, revealed issues such as understaffing, systemic security deficiencies, and improper use of segregation. The report highlighted the influence of gangs and the failure to protect LGBTI inmates from harm. It emphasized the need for humane conditions, citing violations of the Eighth Amendment. Georgia is addressing these issues by hiring a consultant and forming legislative committees to improve prison safety.
