May 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the death of teacher Ewen Scott and student David Kilvert during a Riverside High School excursion at Cradle Mountain. The tragedy remains part of the High School's culture after 60 years, and a special school assembly was held to pay tribute. 

Chris Sayer spoke with principal Jeanna Boulton, and Head Prefects Lucy Walker and Will Wightman, about the tragedy, the 60 year commemoration, and also a special public event being held at Dove Lake in Cradle Mountain.

A defining tragedy still resonates at Riverside High School after 60 years.

The foundation stone for St John's Church was laid on the 28th December in 1824, with the first official service of worship happening on the 16th December 1825.

The church is part of Launceston's early colonial history constructed using convict labour and with bricks made from the clay dug out of what is now Princes Square.

Building and renovation continued throughout the last 200 years and St John's is now an iconic part of Launceston's built heritage.......even being a stopping point for Launceston Ghost tours.

So now, how to celebrate a bi-centenary? 

Well, history in a hardback.

The lead minister at St John's, Archdeacon James Hornby, has worked closely with Tasmanian author Julian Burgess to capture a slice of rare photographs, records and some lesser known stories for "St John's - Launceston's First Church 1825-2025".

A very proud James Hornby, with a copy of the book under his arm, came into the Long Lunch program.

Tasmanian Bruce Gourlay has been caressing the keyboard for nearly 70 years.

Based in Launceston, he is no stranger to the Tasmanian jazz scene.... performing solo with dinner music or mixing and matching small jazz groups like "Double Date".

The Launceston Jazz Club has organised a special afternoon to celebrate International Jazz Day 2025 at the Australian Italian Club on the 4th May.

Bruce and Double Date have been billed to play a couple of sets throughout the afternoon.

Bruce is truly at home with the piano now after an interesting start/stop/start with music in his early school days.
