Tasmanian Bruce Gourlay has been caressing the keyboard for nearly 70 years.

Based in Launceston, he is no stranger to the Tasmanian jazz scene.... performing solo with dinner music or mixing and matching small jazz groups like "Double Date".

The Launceston Jazz Club has organised a special afternoon to celebrate International Jazz Day 2025 at the Australian Italian Club on the 4th May.

Bruce and Double Date have been billed to play a couple of sets throughout the afternoon.

Bruce is truly at home with the piano now after an interesting start/stop/start with music in his early school days.

International Jazz Day - Bruce Gourlay

For the last 25 years, Amanda Shepherd worked her way up to the dress circle of theatre management in Launceston.

This has been the third tranche of Mandy's working life .. the first being education, then came radio which led to her involvement in, and love of, Theatre North at the Princess Theatre.

Respected by the staff and visiting theatre groups, Mandy has now decided to take the final curtain call on her role as General Manager.

It is obvious the rapport Mandy created on both sides of the curtain contributed not only to a successful career but also leaves a thriving theatre scene in Launceston. 

Mandy joined the Long Lunch program to reflect on her working life in Launceston .... and how her hobby of presenting music programs in her spare time on City Park Radio first led to part-time on the ABC radio and then a full time commercial radio gig through to theatre management.

It is surprising where the community radio road can take you.....

For Graeme, his introduction to the Launceston Walking Club sates his passion for the great outdoors.

His involvement and dedication to safely exploring and sharing the walking experience in Tasmania is legendary.

The Launceston Walking Club has a strong list of members and the event calendar is packed with weekend and weekday trips. Whether it be day walks, overnight treks and camping, to bike riding and kayaking, the program of events fills quickly .... 

and still, as a life member of the walking club, Graeme is out there assisting new and experienced walkers and adventurers.

In early April, Graeme will be part of a walk to Scott Kilvert Hut .. to honour the memory of Ewan Scott and David Kilvert who perished there in 1965. There, they will celebrate the 60th anniversary of  the opening of the hut and the huge community contribution the LWC was part of  that enabled the hut to be built in record time.

When Kath Tanner enters a room, you know she is there.

The room is filled with laughter and happiness.... the stories of life and adventure abound.

And if you really want to know about Kath's prosthetic leg and that attractive ankle ... she'll tell that story too.

One of Kath's many hats is that of peer group support volunteer for 'Limbs for Life' in Tasmania.

A group that meets socially and swaps information and stories for the best life.

Kath Tanner told many stories on our Long Lunch program .... but was a little cagey about her golf handicap.  (if you pardon the pun, we think it maybe a single digit)
