A resident of Finley, he served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1971 until 1978 and from 1983 to 1994.

Billie also works full-time as a marketing, communications and recruitment manager at Legacy Cooperative. She serves on the board of directors for the North Dakota Soybean Growers Association and is a member of the Global Farmer Network.
