"You can't manage what you can't measure" was the thought that drove Pagel's Ponderosa in Kewaunee County to be one of the 11 pilot farms in the new Your Farm - Your Footprint program through PDPW.
JJ Pagel recommends other dairy farmers take advantage of this tool that calculates your farm's carbon score. He says it was easier than he thought because the data the consultants need to calculate your score already exists on your farm, such as a nutrient management plan and milk production data.
Pagel's carbon emission score was 1.16. The average is 2.8. His goal is 0.
The assessment provided the farm with more data to help tell the farm's sustainability story. He discovered that through his conservation practices, he saves 352 dump trucks of soil annually.
