Every time a Wisconsin farmer sells an animal, a portion of that sale is dedicated to that commodities check-off program.  The program directs those funds toward research, education and promotion.

The Wisconsin beef industry includes not only cow/calf producers, feedlot operations, and breeding operations - but it also includes the depth of Wisconsin's dairy industry since many of those cows, steers, and calves will ultimately become a part of the beef industry.

Importance of Beef Quality Assurance

Megan Moucha and her grandfather worked on the Century Farm application together. Unfortunately, her grandpa passed before they accepted the award. But he was there in spirit -- and in a frame (pictured). Megan tells Mid-West Farm Report about her family's Bohemian heritage that led them to Cadott in Chippewa County. Megan, the fifth generation, says the farm continues to grow crops. She's working on making the home a space for family get-togethers, as it was historically. A fun story -- every time her great grandmother was pregnant, her husband put on another room on the house. Everyone knew she was expecting before she announced it because of the construction!

Ron Patten is the fourth generation on his family's Sesquicentennial Farm that is 152 years old this year. He says since the beginning, when his ancestors cleared the land and built a home, the farm had been a team effort. Even in close quarters, family members have been pitching in since the beginning to continue the farming tradition in Boyd, located in Chippewa County. Today, the family has decided to rename the farm from Patten Farms to Patten Family Farms as they care for many cash crop acres and a beef herd. His son is continuing the farm, and thinks the sixth generation will pick it up, as well. Ron enjoys seeing his little granddaughter soak up the farm life.

North Crawford School District is making strides in enhancing the quality and sustainability of its school meals by incorporating locally sourced ingredients. The initiative began as a response to the disruptions in the food supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a significant shortage of food in grocery stores and schools alike.

During the pandemic, the federal government introduced Supply Chain Assistance Funds and Wisconsin's Local Foods for Schools program, which North Crawford utilized to address these challenges. Jen Kapinus, the Director of Food Services at North Crawford School District, explains, “We were able to take advantage of these funds during a time when sourcing food locally became crucial. The improvement in meal quality from local sources was so significant that we knew we had to continue this approach.”

The district has focused on sourcing beef from three local farms: Young Family Farms, Spring Creek Meats, and Mountain Lane Farms. Kapinus notes, “In our area, we're surrounded by family farms, so it wasn’t difficult to find local suppliers. We ensure that these farms meet USDA standards and fit within our procurement process.”
