Retirement is something that’s usually celebrated with parties and congratulations. But in farming, it doesn’t quite go like that. There are a few reasons for this, but a main one is a question around identity. If you’re not a farmer, then who are you? That question typically delays farm transitions and succession planning. Today we hear from University of Missouri Extension Farm Transition Specialist Wesley Tucker about what a farmer’s retirement can look like and meaningful strategies to get there. Wesley hasn’t always been in farm transition planning – his role actually started as an economist, but he realized family dynamics have a larger impact on farm success than even market prices.
