Bob Bosold caught up with USDA Undersecretary, Bill Northey, during a visit to Wisconsin.  He gets an update on all the aid packages growers have been stringing together to manage the pandemic.

Ginseng - The Forgotten Wisconsin Crop

As the United States works toward reducing emissions, the Renewable Fuels Association doesn’t want biofuels to get tossed aside. Troy Bredenkamp, Senior Vice President of Government & Public Affairs, is focused on ensuring flexible fuel vehicles -- cars that can run on high blends of renewable corn ethanol -- earn the same sustainability credits as electric vehicles. Specifically, Bredenkamp is working on the Flex Fuel Fairness Act.

Leveling The Playing Field For Flex-Fuel Vehicles

Many Wisconsin farmers have had an unfortunate experience learning about tar spot in corn.  While there may be little known about the fungus in terms of prevention, DeKalb is conducting research now to try and find a combination of potential genetic answers.  Jim Donnelly is a DeKalb Technical Agronomist.  Pam Jahnke spoke with him from a farm field in northern Illinois where Donnelly says he's been dealing with tar spot for about 10 years.

Donnelly says DeKalb is investing time and research dollars to investigate options that would at least provide some resistance in fields where tar spot was previous detected.  One of the research locations they're working with is in Janesville, WI.

As Donnelly points out, they're only focusing research on tar spot where growers have already faced challenges.  He is hopeful that they might be able to bring some resistent products to the marketplace within the next 2-3 years.

Welcome back as we introduce you to the bounty of specialty crops that Wisconsin has to offer and the families who produce them. Today we’re heading to Mayberry Farms in Dodge County. That’s where you’ll find first-generation strawberry grower Danielle Clark. Her family of six started the adventure in 2017. Mayberry Farms in Mayville is known for its 12 acres of strawberries, but they’ve also got honey, dairy goats, chickens, and row crops. Danielle and her husband Tim grew up in farm families, but specialty crops are new territory for them. Keeping bees was also an unexpected joy. Danielle says the apiary has improved strawberry production through pollination. It's also drawn in customers across the country seeking raw honey or natural honey skincare products that she makes on the farm. She says through the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association, you can find a network of specialty crop farmers to help you start or expand your own farm venture.
