Many Wisconsin farmers have had an unfortunate experience learning about tar spot in corn.  While there may be little known about the fungus in terms of prevention, DeKalb is conducting research now to try and find a combination of potential genetic answers.  Jim Donnelly is a DeKalb Technical Agronomist.  Pam Jahnke spoke with him from a farm field in northern Illinois where Donnelly says he's been dealing with tar spot for about 10 years.

Donnelly says DeKalb is investing time and research dollars to investigate options that would at least provide some resistance in fields where tar spot was previous detected.  One of the research locations they're working with is in Janesville, WI.

As Donnelly points out, they're only focusing research on tar spot where growers have already faced challenges.  He is hopeful that they might be able to bring some resistent products to the marketplace within the next 2-3 years.

Will WI See Tar Spot?  Jim Donnelly - DeKalb Tar Spot Research

And this year, the rest of the state will find that out as well. We're excited to announce that the upcoming Wisconsin Science Festival, October 14-20, is all about agriculture this year. Samantha Mulrooney is the Wisconsin Science Festival director. She says this is the first time in 14 years that agriculture has been the overarching theme. She says farms can get involved by visiting wiscifest.org.

Creamery Creek Farm outside of LaCrosse is getting ready to host this year's farm to table dining experience.  Pam Jahnke talks to Louisa Peterson, one of the family members operating Creamery Creek and coordinating with another farm to host the guests.

Randy Welch with Forage Genetics explains that Wisconsin's hay crop is at risk with infestations of alfalfa weevil.

Wet weather is NOT what Wisconsin's strawberry growers want right now.  Stephanie Hoff talks to Danielle Clark of Mayberry Farms in Mayville about the size of this year's potential crop and what they're worried about.

Colombia is the only international partner that's stopped receiving U.S. beef because of concerns over HPAI in dairy.  Homero Recio, Latin America representative for the U.S. Meat Export Federation has an update on the situation.

Meet Creamery Creek Farms - Host Of The 2024 Farm To Table Event

The Wisconsin Beef Council presented Feeding Wisconsin with a $1,175
donation. This donation is the result of a fundraiser hosted by the Wisconsin Beef Council to purchase beef for families in need, says communications director Kaitlyn Kesler. For two weeks, WBC sold t-shirts, long-sleeved t-shirts, and sweatshirts that featured beef cuts with the text, “You can’t live a full life on an empty stomach.” In total, the organization sold 235 shirts across the state. Feeding Wisconsin is the statewide association of the Feeding America food banks that sources, warehouses, and provides food to more than 1,000 local food programs throughout Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Beef Council has a longstanding partnership with Feeding Wisconsin having donated $7,000 to the organization from previous efforts.
