STORY 1:  Trump rallies his troops at Georgia Tech

Former President Donald Trump campaigned at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, emphasizing Georgia's importance for his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. He reiterated his commitment to securing the southern border and introduced new promises, including tax credits for family caregivers and tax-deductible car loan interest for U.S.-made vehicles. Trump also pledged to halve energy prices with his "drill baby drill" approach. He criticized Harris's policies and defended himself against accusations of being a fascist, asserting his energy and resilience. Trump dismissed his Georgia indictment as politically motivated and encouraged supporters to vote, while Democrats highlighted Harris's strong rally turnout in Clarkston.

STORY 2:     Mableton Hires Community Development Director

Juliana Njoku has been appointed as Mableton's first community development director, nominated by Mayor Michael Owens and approved by the city council. She will oversee the Planning and Zoning Department, Business License Department, and Building Permit Operations as Mableton transitions to full municipal operations. With a salary of $145,000, Njoku brings over 25 years of experience, having previously led planning and development in Rockdale County. Her expertise in community development and sustainable planning is expected to drive Mableton's growth. Njoku has also worked with organizations like Atlanta Housing and the United Nations, and holds a certificate in corporate sustainability from Harvard.

STORY 3:  Pedestrian Struck on South Cobb Drive

A man sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car on South Cobb Drive near Pearson Middle School on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. as the pedestrian crossed north of Waldrep Circle. He was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment. The driver, Alanis Navarro from Kennesaw, was unharmed. The Cobb County Police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to contact them at 770-499-3987.

STORY 4:  300 Walton Students, Staff to be Tested for Tuberculosis

Around 300 students and staff at Walton High School will undergo tuberculosis testing this week due to a possible exposure, as reported by Cobb & Douglas Public Health. Despite the minimal risk, mandatory Tuberculin Skin Tests will be administered on Tuesday, with follow-up checks on Thursday. Those unable to test on-site must provide results from a private healthcare provider before returning to school. A positive test indicates TB exposure, necessitating a chest x-ray to check for active disease or the need for preventive medication. The U.S. TB rate increased to 2.9 per 100,000 in 2023.

STORY 5:  Cobb Voters Add to Record Turnout in Final Week of Early Voting

With four days of early voting left, over 218,000 Cobb County citizens have voted, contributing to record-breaking turnout in Georgia's November 2024 election. Cobb Elections Director Tate Fall noted a significant drop in wait times at voting locations. Statewide, over 40% of voters have cast ballots, surpassing previous records. Key local issues include a proposed 1% sales tax for public transit, with opinions divided. Some voters support it for improved transportation, while others oppose due to financial strain. The presidential race remains a top priority for many voters. Early voting ends Friday, and mail ballots should be sent by Tuesday.

STORY 6:  Nearly a Decade After Approval, Cobb Veterans Memorial Still not Standing

Nearly a decade after the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a veterans memorial, construction has yet to start, causing frustration among local veterans. The delay stems from a new funding agreement under review since September, which would have the county cover most of the $4 million needed. Initially, the county was to fund the project, but a 2020 agreement shifted costs to the foundation. The project cost has risen from $2.5 million in 2015 to $7 million today. Only $300,000 has been spent on design, with $3.2 million reserved. The memorial will feature a 120-foot sculpture and a park, serving as a tribute and educational tool. Construction is expected to take two years once funding is secured.

STORY 7:     Cobb County Police Department Celebrates Baby Boom of 2024

In 2024, the Cobb County Police Department experienced a "baby boom," with over 30 officers welcoming new family members. Some of these officers met their partners within the department, growing both their careers and families together.
