Weekend Storms Leave One Injured, Heavy Damage in Cobb

A severe storm hit Cobb County early Sunday, causing damage and minor injuries. The storm, with winds of 30-50 mph and 1.5 inches of rain, led to one person being injured when a tree fell on a home in east Cobb. The Cobb Department of Transportation dealt with 45 reports of trees blocking roads, and five homes were significantly damaged, displacing residents. By Sunday afternoon, most roads were reopened, though utility work continued in some areas. Residents are advised to be cautious near work zones. Damage assessments are ongoing in affected neighborhoods, including areas off Bryant Lane, Six Flags Parkway, Discovery Parkway, and Queens Ferry Road. The National Weather Service has yet to survey the damage. Residents with property damage are encouraged to report it using the county’s online damage assessment form.

Jimmy Carter, the longest-living former U.S. president, passed away at 100. Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based pet food company, has recalled its raw frozen turkey cat food after it tested positive for bird flu, linked to a cat's death in Oregon. The recall affects two-pound bags of Feline Turkey Recipe sold in multiple states, including Georgia, with "best if used by" dates from May 21 to June 23, 2026. The H5N1 strain was found in both the product and the infected cat. Consumers are advised to discard the product and seek refunds. The Oregon Department of Agriculture emphasizes precautions like avoiding raw meat and reporting sick birds.

STORY 4:  $10K Lotto Ticket Purchased in Marietta 

During the holiday season, five Georgians won in the Dec. 24 Mega Millions lottery. Four players matched four numbers and the Mega Ball, winning $10,000 each, while a fifth player used the Megaplier to triple their prize to $30,000. One winning ticket was bought at a Shell Food Mart in Marietta. The winning numbers were 11-14-38-45-46, with the Mega Ball 3 and Megaplier 3X. Winners have 180 days to claim their prizes, and proceeds support education in Georgia. Mega Millions is a multi-state game with drawings every Tuesday and Friday. 

STORY 5:  Judge rules Georgia lawmakers can subpoena Willis 

A judge has allowed the Georgia state Senate to subpoena Fulton County DA Fani Willis in its probe of her role in the election interference case against Donald Trump. Willis has until Jan. 13 to contest the subpoenas, which she claims are overly broad. The subpoenas were issued by a Senate committee investigating alleged misconduct. The Georgia Court of Appeals recently disqualified Willis from the case due to a conflict of interest. Despite this, state Sen. Greg Dolezal plans to reestablish the committee to address concerns about Willis' conduct and decision-making.

STORY 1:  Cobb Approves Hotel, Mixed-Use Development 

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a 490,000-square-foot mixed-use development on Cobb Parkway, featuring retail, restaurants, apartments, and a hotel. Proposed by Riverview Associates, the Riverview Village project includes 290 multifamily units, a 130-key hotel, and 110,000 square feet of commercial space. The development replaces the Riverview Shopping Center, where Kroger recently closed. After extensive community negotiations, the plan was revised to address concerns about traffic and security, removing a proposed trail and pedestrian bridge. The board unanimously approved the project, praised for its collaborative development process. 

STORY 2:     Spots to Ring in the New Year in Cobb County 

Cobb Travel & Tourism highlights several New Year's Eve events in Cobb County. Celebrate at Mac's Chophouse in Marietta with Chef Michael Fuller's special menu. The Battery Atlanta hosts a family-friendly "Early Innings" event at 6 p.m. and a "Late Innings" bash with fireworks at midnight. Live! at The Battery offers live entertainment and VIP packages. The Strand Theatre in Marietta features a Queen tribute concert. Kennesaw's Governors Gun Club hosts a party with a band and champagne toast. Battle & Brew offers a Roaring 20's themed party with VIP options. 

STORY 3:  Cobb Police Capture 3 Murder Suspects in 30 Days 

The Cobb County Police Department announced the arrest of three murder suspects linked to multiple cases across different jurisdictions. The arrests, achieved within 30 days, were credited to advanced technology and teamwork. On November 2, a suspect was apprehended in Mableton after a brief pursuit, with a weapon recovered. On November 12, another suspect was caught following a high-speed chase and crash. The third suspect, wanted for malice murder in DeKalb County, was arrested on December 1 near I-20 in south Cobb. Details were shared on the department's social media and YouTube.

STORY 6:  Cobb County Water System Reports 3,600 Gallon Sewage Overflow 

On December 25, the Cobb County Water System reported a 3,600-gallon wastewater overflow at 1256 E. Piedmont Road in Marietta, affecting a tributary of Sewell Mill Creek. The overflow, caused by a fallen tree damaging a manhole, was reported at 12:31 p.m. and stopped by 3:31 p.m. The incident left a 10-foot sewage trail, but no fish kills were observed. Jim 'N Nick's has opened a new location at Avenue West Cobb, marking its third spot in the county. Cobb Police Capture 3 Murder Suspects in 30 Days

The Cobb County Police Department announced the arrest of three murder suspects within 30 days, crediting advanced technology, commitment, and teamwork. On Nov. 2, officers tracked a suspect accused of murder, injuring two others, and assaulting a child to White Boulevard in Mableton using technology. After a brief chase through a McDonald’s parking lot, the suspect was apprehended, and a weapon linked to the crime was recovered.

On Nov. 12, police pursued another homicide suspect who fled in a high-speed chase, crashing into another car. The suspect was captured that night, while a passenger, who initially escaped, was found the next morning in nearby woods.

The final arrest occurred on Dec. 1 near I-20 in south Cobb. The suspect, wanted for malice murder in DeKalb County, was stopped during a felony traffic stop and taken into custody without incident. Details were shared via social media and YouTube.
