MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko is leading the spaza shop blitz accompanied by environmental inspectors from the City of Ekurhuleni. This follows a rise in incidents of food-borne illnesses from products bought from local spaza shops. The MEC is moving from shop to shop to check if owners are complying with food safety standards. And there's also been concerns about some of the shops selling expired food. SABC reporter, Nonhlanhla Ntshingila is tracking the story and brings us an update...

By Newsbreak Producer Taliesha Naidoo - Government debt is sitting at a crisis level. That's according to Director of Merchant Africa and economist Lavan Gopaul. Delivering the medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that the country's debt has risen too fast and is too high. Godongwana announced that government debt will reach more than six trillion, or 75.5% of GDP, in the 2025/26 financial year. Gopaul explains what this will mean for South Africans heading into the new year...
