The research, led by Dr Lindiwe Gumede from the University of Johannesburg, warns that this widespread silence poses severe clinical risks. According to Dr Gumede, the lack of disclosure can lead to dangerous drug interactions, accidental toxicity, and delayed hospital treatment. The consequences are particularly perilous for vulnerable infants and young children whose developing organs cannot process certain potent herbal compounds. Frontline healthcare workers are now urging a shift toward more inclusive, non-judgmental communication to bridge this dangerous trust gap.
