The National Learner Transport Policy has come under scrutiny- after 14 learners were killed in a horrific crash involving their scholar transport vehicle and a truck. Ayanda Dludla has been charged with 14 counts of murder following the crash- after he allegedly overtook several vehicles and crashed into an oncoming truck. This week Transport Minister Barbara Creecy indicated that her department was in the final stages of reviewing the National Learner Transport Policy. Meanwhile scholar transport services were faulted in Gauteng yesterday after the industry accused government of failing to address the sectors' concerns adequately. Equal Education's Aluyolo Mbeki joined the conversation...

By Newsbreak Producer, Taliesha Naidoo - The Inkatha Freedom Party in eThekwini has condemned the municipality's decision to disconnect water and electricity at public schools, particularly in the Phoenix area, just as the 2026 academic year begins. The IFP says the move is unconstitutional, reckless and socially irresponsible, arguing that schools cannot function or uphold learners' right to basic education without essential services. IFP Councillor Dr Jonathan Annipen is calling for the immediate reconnection of affected schools, while KZN Department of Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi says they are in ongoing engagements with the City to find a timeous solution to the matter....
