Some companies create fake job titles to skirt overtime laws

Deaths from drug overdoses have been on a steady upward trajectory in the United States for almost three uninterrupted decades.

So when new CDC data came out this morning showing what could be a slight decrease in overdose deaths ... or at least a leveling off ... there was both excitement and caution among the experts who have been tracking this uniquely American epidemic.

KNX chief correspondent Charles Feldman talked with one of those experts ... epidemiologist Brandon Marshall at Brown University, who focuses on substance abuse ... and asked him whether he's convinced that drug overdose deaths are really slowing.

Live sports broadcasts were the last thing that belonged almost exclusively to the old-school TV networks and cable channels.  

But now streaming services are muscling into that territory.

Netflix has announced that they've won the rights to broadcast the NFL's Christmas Day games this year.

Joe Flint covers the entertainment industry for the Wall Street Journal ... he tells us that streaming services have been eager to get in on live events.

But Flint says there's another reason that the NFL was so attractive for Netflix,

Netflix will pay the NFL a cool $150-million to broadcast just two games on Christmas Day.

Gina Osborn was Metro's first ever chief of public safety ... up until the end of March, when she was relieved of her position.

We're telling you about Osborn's firing because it is part of the bigger story of LA Metro's continued struggle with ensuring the safety of its riders on trains and buses ... there were three more stabbings at Metro stations or buses just this week alone.

KNX chief correspondent Charles Feldman called up Gina Osborn ... and her lawyer Marc Greenberg as well ... and asked her about Metro's failures to enforce public safety.

KNX News reached out to Metro with a request to talk with their CEO Stephanie Wiggins to give her an opportunity to respond to Gina Osborn's criticisms; here's the statement provided by Metro in lieu of an interview:

"Metro does not comment on personnel matters.  

That said, public safety is Metro's top priority. Most security incidents arise from untreated mental illness and drug addiction.  Although Metro didn't create these issues, we must manage them. We're increasing law enforcement presence, enhancing cameras, lighting, and barriers, and exploring fare gate designs. We're also employing a care-based approach with ambassadors, homeless outreach, and crisis intervention teams."
