The Fight Over Measure C Renewal 

Luigi Mangione’s Anonymous Jury 

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 on August 11 to file a lawsuit challenging AB 1923, a new California law that requires Fresno County to place a Measure C replacement transportation tax initiative on the November 2026 ballot. The supervisors supporting the lawsuit argue the law is unconstitutional and improperly interferes with local government authority.  

A New York judge has ruled that the jury in the upcoming state murder trial of Luigi Mangione will remain anonymous, citing the extraordinary public attention surrounding the case. The judge also approved an overflow courtroom so additional members of the press and public can watch the proceedings if the main courtroom reaches capacity.

The Wall Street Journal reports that major Gulf energy exporters, including countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are increasingly concluding that Iran may retain effective control over the Strait of Hormuz for the foreseeable future. While they dislike this outcome, many see it as preferable to a return to full-scale war. 

Axios reports that, for only the third time in U.S. history, women now hold more jobs than men in the American workforce. As of February 2026, there were about 200,000 more women employed than men, according to federal labor data highlighted by Indeed's Hiring Lab. 

Fortune reports that women now hold more jobs than men in the U.S. workforce for only the third time in history, but argues that the bigger story is not women entering the workforce. Instead, it's that men are increasingly leaving or not entering the labor force.

The Guardian reports that President Donald Trump secretly traveled on a different military aircraft after a NATO summit in Turkey in July 2026, while the public, reporters, and some White House staff were led to believe he was aboard Air Force One. The operation was reportedly prompted by a credible Iranian assassination threat. 

Wisconsin State Rep. Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member and candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor, is facing renewed scrutiny over past social media posts that critics argue were sharply critical of the United States and traditional American institutions.
