Fresno Councilmember Annalisa Perea says she’ll introduce legislation to block registered sex offenders from running for city office, after Fresno resident Rene Campos, who is on the sex offender registry, announced plans to run for the District 7 council seat. State law currently allows registered offenders to run, but Perea and several colleagues say the rules must change.

Two crashes in one week at Fresno’s infamous Friant & Shepherd intersection, where red‑light running is a chronic problem, have renewed calls for safety improvements. Neighbors say they’ve long avoided the intersection, and the city now plans $2.5 million in upgrades, including moving back a visibility‑blocking wall and redesigning the right‑turn lane to reduce confusion.
