  I’m Bill Zortman and this is our Agri Business Show---and while many broadcasters opted not to follow Farmers from South Dakota looking for help in DC with a new farm bill-----we covered the visit---of Doug Sombke and his Farmers Union Tribe---every chance we got. Special thanks to President Sombke and thanks to Rocky Forman who was taking good care of us---as we followed along.

  Today—with those who made the journey to DC virtually back in their usual surroundings---we’ll try to get a feel as what they were thinking---and what else they thing needs to be done…and will anything be accomplished----

   President Sombke---you and I get to talk about what you are doing—what you want it to do long range----and yes what happens if anything –NEXT!!!

   Being an election year that gets closer each day---we know there are several irons in the fire---what do you hope gets done with the visit---and how would that affect those in agriculture not only in South Dakota but around the country—

 National Farmers Union (NFU) concluded its annual Legislative Fly-In, which brought nearly 250 family farmers and ranchers to Washington for hundreds of meetings with members of Congress and government officials to demand a farm bill that works for family farmers.

"Hundreds of family farmers walked away from their fields and livestock this week because staying silent is no longer an option. Farm policy has been broken for too long, keeping family farmers trapped in a system we didn’t create and that cannot be fixed with incremental changes," said NFU President Rob Larew. "It's time for policymakers to step up and deliver real, lasting change that reflects the realities of farming in today's world and sets farms up for the next generation.”

Over three days, Farmers Union members met with members of Congress, officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Department of Justice (DOJ), the White House, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to share their lived experiences of the economic issues facing farm country.

Farmers Union members collectively visited with every Congressional office to push for a farm bill that works for family farmers—one that updates the safety net to reflect the economic reality farmers face; one that breaks the power of corporate monopolies and strengthens competition; one that includes mandatory country-of-origin labeling; and one that invests in opening more domestic markets and builds demand for American agricultural products.

    All week long we have been following the South Dakota Farmers Union members that made the trip to DC---looking for support on a farm bill------we appreciated Rocky Forman working with us to talk to those attending----and we are doing the same in this show—we started with long time President Doug Sombke----and we had the VP of the National Farmers Union—who is also the VP of the South Dakota Farmers Union----joining us---Mr. Kipley---talk to us about what you saw---what you expect to get done---and where all of this is headed on Capital Hill ----

South Dakota Farmers Union made the trip to DC this week looking to get some help with a farm bill---we have heard from President Doug Sombke---VP Kipley-----both state wide—and in his local chapter---

   They have set the thought process on what they saw—what they want to get accomplished---and the hopes for a better tomorrow---

----- we’ll continue to watch and update as we can—we thank Rocky Formen for helping us with the interviews—and explanations on what all what happening in DC –in the minds of the elected officials—as well as those doing the asking from South Dakota----
