Blog-May 5, 2023-9-10—It’s YOUR Business

It’s a Cinco deMayo day---yes May 5th----and we have our It’s YOUR Business Show in place both 9-10 and 10-11.

Jodi Schwan---starts us off---with a number of good downtown updates-----

  • Renovated building near future Riverline District is attracting new retail. But what-
  • More leases to announce from Jodi on the Steel District
  • Murphy’s is looking for a buyer
  • What is the Greenway’s Missing Links-

That’s enough to get the juices flowing----and find some weather that is warmer than we have been seeing in past Friday’s.

     Jessie Schmidt---BBB of South Dakota---

Should have known warmer weather and we get an early reference that BBB says storm season is storm chaser season.

Jessie is going into the storm chasers ----but the fly-by-night scammers who don’t need a warning signal---they create their own and the trouble that goes with it.

We’ll hear that your insurance company should be the first business you cal when you have storm damage---in addition

  • Have a direction conversation with your insurance agent rather than just an email exchange. It’s the best way to get the lowdown on what your policy covers and detail like how long you have to file your claim.
  • Home inventory list ahead of time---as you go room to room and perhaps even video your belongings. Be sure important documents have been saved digitally-either on the cloud or a thumb drive.
  • Might be handy is you know if your insurance company recommends a contractor—if so check them out yourself at bbb.org for their marketplace history.
  • Never sign over insurance checks to contractors. Get an invoice and pay them directly then get receipts.
  • Don’t fall for the contractor’s line about waiving an insurance deductible and then working that amount into the bid. IT’S ILLEGAL!!
  • Read a contract carefully—never signing one with blank pages or even blank areas.
  • Pay with a credit card if possible---this offers additional fraud protection.

Emmett Keyser—SD Game Fish and Parks---has Dave Lucchesi—Southeast Area Fisheries Supervisor to visit about a couple of issues—sort of in follow-up to our guest—John Lott—Fisheries chief—regarding walleye spawning.

We will get an update from area lakes here in the Southeast Region on winterkilled due to shallow water, snow cover on the ice and of course resulting lack of oxygen for the fish.

Time permitting we could get a short update on the progression of the walleye spawning activities.

9:32---Dr. Neuropathy comes calling—the guest is Dennis Vangoor---who came to the clinic about 10 years ago---he described his foot pain as aching, numbness, share pain, pins and needles. That is often the dead feeling.

Patients like Dennis come in with a walker---he couldn’t work, walk, stand or do any recreational activities and even the normal daily activities. He used to ride a motorcycle---he suffered with depression and worried about independence.

His condition was headed progressively the wrong way. Last year he was in the hospital for 72 days due to injury from falls

With the work---we’ll hear how it got better---he is motivated to live life to the fullest. In essence he believes the Good Lord has given him more time and a much higher quality of life than he had before---we’ll share what he is doing---and how Dr. Unruh is helping make it happen.

9:45---Tenley Schwartz---on this First Friday---and a Sculpture Walk happening—we get some updates for Downtown Sioux Falls.

May 5- 5-8---Various locations for the May Art & Wine Walk—you can sip some wine and check out work from local artists ---the viewing is free---but wine sampling punch card is $25—or wine by the glass at $5.

You can discover and experience—the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center---discover—various science activities including Avera State Science and fascinating demonstrations with science center interactors—there will exciting scavenger hunts and artists receptions in the Visual Art Center.

Check out the Washington Pavilion Belbas Theater—live music from Chris Sandvig at Monk’s Ale House ---and that is just the start.

Brian Jamros---SF Canaries---is down to 7 days and counting----we’ll hear about the players arriving last weekend with a condensed Spring Training taking place—it began Wednesday---Opening Weekend is going to be great in addition to Opening Day---includig College Night on May 12th that includes the first Fireworks Friday and a big Saturday night being planned with details to come early next week and of course a Mother’s Day game to round out a great weekend.

We close the hour with Diana Patterson—Sanford Career Opportunities ---and RN’s and LPN’s are really needed.
