Blog-March 1, 2023-10-11—It’s YOUR AG Business

Our It’s YOUR Agri Business Show---made a couple of road trips this morning to talk Agriculture.

Biggest nationwide----Nationally Known Commodity Classic---in Orlando Florida. I caught up with Jim Seurer from Glacial Lakes on Tuesday—changing planes in Chicago—and we set up—his reaction to some breaking news that is sure to be discussed at this National Event. Ethanol Blend Rate hit a record high 2022. Plus there is more push –and Persistence and Momentum will be the key to Ethanol Industry Success in 2023.

That was just the start---Friday—we’ll get an update from the Glacial Lakes leader about what he learned—and what we should share with our audience. It’s not all about plug ins---and there is still a need for Ethanol in 2023 and beyond.

A very busy Casey Crabtree—Senate Majority Leader –updates us as we get to 7 days left in the 2023 legislative session. He was talking about grocery taxes----and other events that have us all looking just what will be remembered in this session.

It was Travis Starks---Marsh McClennan Agency that talked about the time they are spending on renewals-----and what else they have to help with safety in the month of March. That father-son team---Roger and Travis—have an understandable way to talk to their clients---and the circle of where they are going to help---and the number of members of their team continues to grow. They do care—and it shows—and we get a chance to share something different in each show.

Brent Baloun---Plains Commerce Bank—talks about PLANNING in their 9 or so communities they serve. Whether we talk to Brent—Rodney or two others from Plains Commerce in Watertown and Sioux Falls as we have done in 2023---we get the idea—they take the time to listen----and PLANNING is good 12 months of the year.

On the half hour—Sara Heinrich—KFGO Fargo—the Growing Harvest Network—gives us some food for thought from North the Border---they are cousins and we can all learn with how they approach ag topics.

Matt Swenson---Swenson Commodities—Owner-Partner up to the minute market man joins us to update the grains-the meat—the energy and the Big Board on Wall Street. What will March bring? We’ll tell you step by step with each of our Ag Business Shows.

Mitch Richtor---SD Farmers Union---standard bearer for the Legislative Session did some updating on Farmers Union Day at the Capital on Tuesday. Crowds not as big this time in the session---but many of those will be headed to the National Farmers Union Convention in San Francisco this weekend and into early next week. It’s something I’m scheduled to do with a contingent next week with segments next week and the Monthly Farmers Union Show on Tuesday—March 14th.

Debra Owen---VP for Information for the City of Sioux Falls also joined in the discussion what is still be done during the legislative session. She gave us some answers of what still needs to be done. We’ll hear more on Friday.

Jaime Wood—SBA of South Dakota joined us this morning----with a list of events coming up in March-April and May.

Gentle reminder for SD private nonprofit organizations of the March 29, 2023, deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for economic injury caused by the severe storm, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding that occurred last year on May 12, 2022.

  • Private nonprofits of any size that provide essential services of a governmental nature  may apply for SBA EIDL up to $2 million to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. These EIDL funds may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the private nonprofit suffered any property damage.

  • These low-interest federal disaster loans are available in the following counties: Aurora, Beadle, Bon Homme, Brookings, Clay, Codington, Day, Deuel, Grant, Hamlin, Hanson, Hutchinson, Kingsbury, Lake, McCook, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Roberts and Turner counties; the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation.

  • The interest rate is 1.875 percent with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

----------Emmett Keyser—South Dakota Game Fish and Parks---

Share his thoughts----on what’s coming up in March---

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) kicks off the fifth year of the Nest Predator Bounty Program as part of Gov. Noem’s Second Century Initiative. The 2023 program opens for South Dakota youth under the age of 18 on March 1. The program will open to all South Dakota residents April 1. Tails from raccoon, striped skunk, badger, red fox, and opossum will be eligible for $10 per-tail payments with a maximum total payout of $500,000.

“Getting the next generation involved in conservation is critical to keeping our South Dakota outdoor heritage strong,” said Kevin Robling, GFP Department Secretary. "The Nest Predator Bounty Program is an excellent way to get youth and families engaged with the outdoors."

In 2022, 143 youth participated in the youth-only month of March and submitted 2,100 nest predators during this time. Overall, 2,367 individuals participated in the 2022 program removing 55,220 nest predators. Youth made up 32% of total participants, which was higher than in 2021 at 29%.
