if there's one thing I want people to know about this weekend, it's that Open Streets is back on Friday night, and this may be one of the most creative versions we've ever done.
From 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Main Avenue between 11th and 13th Streets will be transformed into a giant community gathering space. No traffic. No parked cars. Just people enjoying Downtown together.
This month's Open Streets is especially meaningful because it's a celebration of Architecture Incorporated's 50th anniversary. Architecture Inc. has been a longtime downtown business, a longtime supporter of Downtown Sioux Falls, and a company that has helped shape the physical character of our city for decades.
When we started talking with them about how to celebrate 50 years, they came back with one of the most creative and ambitious ideas we've ever collaborated on.
They're building an 18-hole mini golf course right in the middle of the street.
And when I say mini golf course, I don't mean a few simple putting greens. These holes are absolutely wild. Architecture firms, engineers, designers, builders, and creative teams from around the community have spent months dreaming up interactive holes that you simply won't see anywhere else.
Admission is just $6 per player or $20 for a group of four, and every participant gets to keep their golf ball.
We've also partnered with the Sanford International, which has pulled together prizes for anyone lucky and skilled enough to score a hole-in-one on select holes throughout the course.
It's going to be fun, it's going to be unique, and it's exactly the kind of experience that makes Downtown Sioux Falls special.
What I love most about Open Streets is that it's really an open invitation.
We say this all the time: if you're within 100 miles of Sioux Falls, this is your Downtown.
Open Streets is an opportunity to experience it differently. To walk where you normally drive. To run into neighbors. To discover a business you've never visited before. To slow down and enjoy the city.
And yes, before anyone asks, we go rain or shine.
The good news is there are dozens of businesses, restaurants, shops, galleries, and venues surrounding the event. If a little weather rolls through, you've got plenty of places to duck inside, grab a drink, browse a store, enjoy dinner, or explore one of the many events happening around Downtown that evening.
In fact, Open Streets sits right in the middle of a huge First Friday lineup.
The Art Collective at the Washington Pavilion is happening Friday and Saturday, featuring more than 70 local artists showcasing their work.
---The Pavilion is also hosting Free First Friday, which means free access to the Visual Arts Center and Kirby Science Discovery Center.
----Rehfeld's Modern is hosting an artist reception. Plum's is hosting an oysters and wine pairing experience. Levitt at the Falls has a free concert featuring Carolyn Wonderland. Downtown businesses are extending hours, activating sidewalks, and creating experiences throughout the evening.
----Saturday keeps the momentum going.
-----The Paws & Pours Pup Crawl benefits Almost Home Canine Rescue and gives dog lovers a chance to explore Downtown with their four-legged friends while supporting a great cause.
-----Saturday also brings another full day of the Art Collective, along with the street musician program called AMPT, our summer activation program that fills Downtown with live music and performances throughout the summer months.
------Families won't want to miss Mister G at Levitt at the Falls Saturday morning. Then Saturday evening, Levitt returns with SlapBak, delivering a high-energy mix of funk, rock, and hip-hop in another free community concert.
------And while we're talking summer, it's worth remembering that we're now officially into the season where Downtown comes alive nearly every day of the week.
------The Co-op's Friday patio grill-outs are back. AMPT performances are happening throughout Downtown every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
If you're looking for Sunday plans, Downtown's brunch scene continues to be one of the best in the region. Whether it's coffee and pastries, a full brunch spread, or patio dining with friends and family, it's a great way to wrap up the weekend.
As always, you can find the complete calendar of events at DTSF.com/events.
---There is far more happening than we can fit into a few minutes on the radio, and this weekend is a perfect example of why Downtown continues to be the place where Sioux Falls comes together.
Just ahead—some of the sports activities you can look for in June.
