Blog-July 21, 2023-10-11—It’s YOUR Agri Business
A nice—very believable cast of characters in this 10-11 show.
We started with Darren Hefty—AG PHD on a Friday----we talked about it being a First Friday—a Farmers First Friday—and all that will be happening this week.
We did get an update on the crops---what we are seeing----the crops---their AG PHD Show at 2PM on Sirius 147---as well as the big Field Day—Scholarship Day less than a week away on the Baltic site. Scholarships—information---just feeling at home—and the Hefty’s do a fabulous job informing and helping the next generation get a boost towards the future. Just look for Baltic—all signs lead to the Hefty Home Site. The rest is up to you.
We started from there with Congressman Dusty Johnson—who is a former PUC Commissioner and with the talk this week from Tuesday till (who knows when) on the CO2 pipelines—the safety—Eminent Domain—we got educated very well. Our only Congressman in South Dakota gave us a pretty good course on what they are doing in DC----and we’ll let others tell you the political pandering----we just wanted the facts from Dusty and he did very well.
Right behind—Doug Sombke—President—SD Farmers Union. They held a Board meeting late this week and talked about the pipeline—helping those folks in Doug’s home County of Brown---with their concerns about Eminent Domain----feeling like they weren’t getting a straight shake ----and how the hearings this week in Pierre –could bring out other counties—other lawmakers in Pierre to jump in and make sure that SD is doing the right thing. We’ll follow along –with the help of both of the Carbon concerns---Navigator---and our guest today Dave Daum—Summit Carbon Solutions Safety Expert—talked us thru what they are doing—the safety he thinks residents should feel---and sort of the scenario we’ll be hearing and in our case REPORTING on THIS WEEK.
Senator John Thune—2nd ranking Senator in DC—talk to us about not only the Summit issue----but also his work on the bill he introduced to increase Transparency of the Prescription Drug Supply Chain. Senator Thune is keeping a close watch on the drug supply issue and those who feel like they have seen their regular prescription substituted with something else.
Our Senator is keeping a close eye on it---and we know he’s watching the Pipeline situation as well.
Sarah Heinrich KFGO Fargo—provided the Growing Harvest Network Report—Matt Swenson—the Morning Commodities---and we had the numbers taken care of.
Tenley Schwartz---Downtown Sioux Falls—shared the weekend plans---like the Summer Downtown Crazy Days—tomorrow and Saturday, Levitt Concerts—Music by Geoff Gunderson---at the Old Courthouse Museum Courtyard, Camp Comfort at Monk’s, Falls Art Market, Nyberg Ave Hot Classic Night Saturday Night, Summer SlamoRAMA Wrestling 4-6 Saturday 101 No Phillips Avenue in Wells Fargo Parking Ramp, The Farmers Market---and Fridays on the Plaza Continue.
From the Sioux Falls Canaries—Duell Higby—gave us an update on the All Star Game---and answered my question which is the biggest rival----Fargo or Sioux City. He suggested Fargo—the team will be back to town on Tuesday----and they seem to be marching to the beat of a better drummer now in the 2nd half.
Alla ---our very thoughtful Ukraine reporter did an update for us as she always does on Friday.
We talked about the grain deal that did indeed expire on Monday and will not be renewed by the Russians. Their demands—plug Russia back into the international Visa/Mastercard Banking system and lift other sanctions imposed by Europe, US and other countries. If any ships try approaching or leaving the Ukrainian ports in Black Sea—they will be considered a threat and destroyed.
Ukraine accounts for 10% of the world wheat market, 15% of the corn, and 13% of the barley. It’s also a key player in the market of sunflower oil.
Russia didn’t just not extend the deal, they also destroyed/bombed one of the major ports in Odessa that was used to get the grain out of Ukraine to other countries.
Alla continues to share Ukraine stories----some not the nicest---but it gives us a picture of what is going and helps us understand why SD helping them with work, homes and schools in pretty doggone important
Alla asked if you think more Ukrainians deserve to reach safety in South Dakota contact her---
We closed with a mini-report from Mr. Golf Dave Austad---who updated us on the British Open.
The diversity in the show of guests and topics is what we believe makes this show special—something you can find in one location.
