Yes still looking for the million dollar rains---but while we look we have a number issues we’ll talk about—you’ll hear about Wessington Springs Family—as South Dakota Farmer’s Union—family of the month---check the State Fair---an executive order from DC with 72 initiatives to help create more competition, a Soil Health and Drought Management Workshop on the 27th, you’ll meet the 72 year old man who was able to get Farmers Union Camp members to sit up and ask questions about stress.
Lots of details in the hour---and in the studio with me is Wayne Soren—VP South Dakota Farmers Union—and Luke Reindl SDFU Legislative Communication Specialist.
We start with a friend to agriculture ---all over South Dakota—Mr. Jim Woster—lots of time in Sioux Falls—but grew up in Reliance. He penned an article that got lots of attention –asking “Why Send Our Healthcare Dollars to other States?”
Jim makes the point that many farm and ranch families could use help when it comes to paying for healthcare—rather than shipping our dollars to other states.
Woster leads us in a discussion on mental healthcare—taking its toll just as COVID 19 did. Covid—give or take a ‘strain’ or two.
10:13---National Farmers Union’s Mike Stranz visits with us—and explained a little further about the President’s Executive Order with 72 initiatives to help create more competition. We’ll share a break down on how it will affect rural Americans including the South Dakota Farmers and Ranchers.
Including the much bounced around cattle processing industry—and the help that is truly needed.
10:21---Mr. Soren an Mr. Reindl—fill us in on the July 27th Soil health and Drought Management Workshop 9-11:30 in Mitchell at the Highland Conference Center. The workshop will feature Anthony Bly-SDSU Extension soils field specialist, Dan Forgey-SD Soil Health Coalition Board, a Gettysburg farmer and a Farm Service Agency Rep.
With 63% of South Dakota experiencing drought conditions—it will provide farmers and ranchers with information on soil health practices they can implement.
10:33---you’ll meet Josh Bartel—who Represents the Wessington Springs Family that was selected as the Farm Family of the month---5th Generation---and it’s a year of challenges—we’ll find out what the family is doing—how is wife works as a nurse---and his 10 year old daughter—may be the 6th generation to the keys to the place.
We mentioned stress earlier in the show---and it was a week ago that Dr. Thomas Flamboe—Mental Strength Conditioning Coach from Black Hills State University –presented a forum at the South Dakota Farmer’s Union State Camp on “No fretting the stressing”.
We’ll talk about the stress students are under---with many of them perfectionists and when things don’t go perfectly—they can collapse. We’ll check Dr. Flamboe’s coping techniques like breathing, mediation, exercise, art and music.
His suggestion talk with our kids about stress more—particularly the teens. We’ll talk how the family can say on top of it—lessening the effects of stress and talking to yourself.
10:47 -Candi Briley—SD State Fair will include things to look forward to very, very soon.
We’ll talk about the entertainment---the activities---the future of the Fair---and the SDFU Day on September 4th—it will include a Panel Discussion on the US Food Supply Chain—COVID 19 revealed multiple weaknesses, too much dependence on a few processions—as well as the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl.
We close the hour with Laura Edwards—South Dakota State Climatologist---we have seen some life in some rain---but it needs to be more- We’ll find out who the driest is—the hottest place---and what the long range maps show for us thru the end of July and in August and the fall.
