Brandon Hanson---Downtown Sioux Falls is our guest each Friday in this slot----

here’s a lot happening downtown this weekend, but we also need to talk about what kicks off March — because Mash Madness is back, and this is a big one.

Let’s start with this weekend.

On Friday night, Plum’s Cooking Company is hosting a special Mead Dinner with Big Lost Meadery & Brewery from 6 to 8 PM. Chef April Johnson has built a full menu designed specifically to pair with mead — from appetizers through a glazed pork tenderloin entrée. It’s one of those curated, small-group dining experiences that downtown does really well.

Later Friday night, Pert Near Sandstone takes the stage at ICON with Tomahawk County. If you love high-energy Midwest roots music and modern string band sounds, this will be a packed house.

Saturday night, Kiran Cordes plays live at Myrtle’s Speakeasy starting at 8:30. It’s more intimate, more groove-driven — a perfect fit for that hidden-away cocktail setting.

Now let’s look ahead to March.

Mash Madness 2026 officially kicks off March 1, and this year marks the 10th annual competition. It’s sponsored by Williquors, and it has grown into one of downtown’s most creative and competitive promotions.

We have 31 competitors this year across three categories:
Beer.
Craft Cocktails.
And Non-Alcoholic options.

That third category is especially exciting — it reflects how our downtown beverage scene continues to evolve and get more inclusive.

Mash Madness is simple: you taste, you rate, and the community crowns the winners. It’s not judges behind closed doors — it’s the public deciding who makes the best drinks of 2026.

And what makes Mash Madness special isn’t just the competition. It’s what happens because of it.

People don’t just stop for one drink. They make a night of it. They explore new places. They revisit favorites. They discover a coffee shop they didn’t know existed or try a zero-proof creation they wouldn’t have ordered otherwise. That foot traffic ripples outward to retailers, restaurants, and entertainment venues throughout downtown.

Williquors has been an incredible partner in helping us elevate this event year after year. Their support allows us to spotlight the creativity happening behind the bar — the mixologists, brewers, and baristas who are constantly pushing the envelope.

Mash Madness isn’t just about drinks. It’s about driving traffic, building energy, and reinforcing that Downtown Sioux Falls has one of the most dynamic beverage scenes in the region.

And then on March 2, the Washington Pavilion will host Emily’s Hope Presents “Can’t Look Away”, an Emmy Award-winning documentary screening followed by a live panel discussion about youth and social media. It’s another example of how downtown isn’t just entertainment — it’s conversation and community engagement.
