9:31/00—Wellness Wednesday 3

Shelly from Dakota Abilities is here---and you’ll hear here one more time in February—and then in March for Dakota Abilities Month (605-334-4220)

As we're getting closer to March, where we will  promote Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month - the 2026 theme is The Power of Support
DDAM highlights the need for removing barriers to community participation, education, employment, and housing for people with IDD
IDD encompasses conditions that affect physical and/or behavioral development, learning
We advocate for people with disabilities, and we help people with disabilities advocate for themselves

Think about the barriers people with IDD face - being misunderstood, overlooked - let's celebrate achievements and, more importantly, take the time to get to know the person

Examples - reunited with the father of a person supported, the reunion of memories and hugs, human connections

Use of respectful, people-first language, for example: person with a disability rather than disabled person

So How can you help?

Be cognizant of people-first language
See the person, not their wheelchair, not their disability
Volunteer - get a group of friends and come play games, join in art projects, come to a play - our doors are open and we love visitors
