Dr. Joshua Jordee joins us---and he was playing half weather man and even needed to be able to clean up as well---
School is just about to start and students of all ages are getting ready for it in all sorts of ways. New school clothes including new school shoes, new backpacks, and getting used to new lockers possibly as well as new books.
Many schools are shifting away from backpacks in no small part due to the strain they can put on a student's body. However, if using a backpack, especially when going to and from school, it's important to get a good one as well as to use it properly. The best ones will include a lower strap to go around the body in addition to the arm straps and you should make sure the arm straps are tight enough to keep the bag up and not drooping down. Finally, this may seem obvious, but be sure to use both straps rather than carrying the backpack entirely on one shoulder.
Likewise, once the schedule is figured out, hopefully after open house or orientation, you'll be able to tell if you can reasonably get to your locker between classes. Most of the time you should be able to, but I know sometimes in high school in particular classes and locker locations can occasionally be very far apart. Whenever able, make sure you're only taking the book(s) and tablet you need. Also, the way you carry them can be important. Either hold them in front of you with both hands, or equally with each hand, rather than carrying everything on one side. Especially be sure not to constantly carry everything under the same arm between every class.
Many students will also be starting up autumnal sports. It's always important to get adjusted when getting back into the swing of sports practice to help as the body gets used to the unfamiliar motions and activities again. However, for some students, even just getting back into walking around between classes and carrying things like books and laptops will be enough of a change from their summer activities that getting a back to school adjustment is probably still going to be a good idea.
Speaking of which, with children in general, the signs and symptoms regarding when to get adjusted are often different from adults since more often than not kids are pretty good about bouncing back from injuries and are less likely to bring up pain. However, because they're still growing, it's good to get checked a few times a year at least just to make sure they're growing in the right direction and a week or two into the school year is a perfect time for it. I think next time I'll bring up some conditions that are more specific to kids for adjustments, but for now I'll bring up that even though kids are less likely than adults to have lasting aches or pains, when they do, it's still just as much a sign for them to get adjusted as it is for adults.
Finally, I want to bring up, Dr. Plueger will be giving an even more detailed talk on the same subject, as well as being available for any more specific questions, tomorrow at our office at 6pm open to everyone.
As always, if you're looking for a good chiropractor for these back to school adjustments, or for any other adjustment, we have two at Jorde Chiropractic.
