Blog—August 28, 2024—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday
As we move to close down the month of August---we did our Working on Wellness Wednesday Show. Quite the cross-section of topics---all designed to help our listeners in the days and weeks ahead.
From Avera—Dr. Chad Thury---Avera Family Medicine Physician and Regional Director for Clinical Quality took thru the importance of receiving the mRNA COVID Vaccine boosters for the patient populations based on the KP-2 Strain of the COVID Virus. As we heard from Dr. Thury—COVID vaccines are one of the best and safest ways to protect against severe illness and hospitalization. We learned that UPDATED COVID vaccines are chosen to target the variants currently circulating and Dr. Thury said they are recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.
If you have had CVOID this summer, you’ll have strong infection-based immunity and can wait a few months after your infection before getting the vaccine. CDC says you can wait 3 months as your symptoms began or are asymptomatic cases since you first tested positive. Some evidence says you could wait as long as 6 months after a COVID infection receive the updated vaccine.
If you have never been vaccinated against COVID now is a great time to start. People 5 years of age and older are considered up-to-date on COVID vaccination once they receive the updated vaccine.
We did get an outlook for the fall respiratory season—and even got some advice as to how families and lower their risk.
Flu shots are also being promoted and Dr. Thury said you could and probably should get both now. We did ask about protecting the older citizens from Covid---and the best advice is to do all you can to lower your risk.
Dr. Joshua Jordee joined us this morning and we talked about it is unfortunate that a lot of problems that chiropractors deal with can show up in ways very similar to other conditions. Sometimes even potentially severe ones.
Dr. Jordee talked about the signs people may already know, but can always be reminded of, as to when to immediately seek medical help. A pain the chest usually fits that or profuse sweating and feeling winded. Those are both hallmark signs of a heart attack. Slurred speech, drooping face, sudden weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, sudden vision changes without an immediately apparent cause can be signs of a stroke.
Shooting pain in the arms or legs are often from neuropathy or radiculopathy. Dr. Jordee suggested you play it cautious and get to the ER as opposed to if it’s first thing in the morning or after a recent neck or should injury.
We heard about rib issues, kidney stones and red flags that can make a difference.
Guest #3---Dr. Allen Unruh with a guest—George A Bos---70 years of age---who when he was 18---his left leg got run over by a 16 ton truck on asphalt-and it stopped right on the foot—all 32,000 pounds. After 6 weeks on crutches—his feet always felt cold—in 2020 he had his hip replaced and he still can’t flex his foot. He has a cane—had lost almost 60% of the nerve function in his left foot and 90% in the right. He sleeps in a recliner and his feet always feel cold. He loves to race cars—yes as the driver. He describes his pain as NUMBNESS, TINGLING, Cool Sensation, Swelling and some dead feeling. It does affect his ability to sleep.
People told him to try something different and that is why he is with Dr. Unruh. With what he has done with Dr. Unruh he feels 40% better—that is outstanding---and we’ll continue to watch him as he improves.
Mary Michaels—AARP talked to us about the work they are doing—and you can find her on Media Hub at aarp.org/sd.
Among the topics—work from home job scams---many Americans on the hunt for the perfect remote job or side hustle and criminal scammers are ready to exploit these ambitions. Mary suggest you review the Warning signs of a shady job posting.
SD—get ready to SHRED—if you throw documents in the regular trash that contain personal information, you could put yourself at risk for identity theft. AARP is again hosting free drive-thru shredding services in Sioux Falls September 18th, Aberdeen, September 19th and Rapid City on October 18th. Pack your old personal and financial documents to be securely shredded, free of charge. Registration is not required.
