Blog-August 28, 2024-10-11---It’s YOUR Agri Business
As the South Dakota State Fair was opening on this Wednesday morning—Candi Briley who has been helping us for months count  it down gave us a look at what to expect---today, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
We have truly appreciated the fact we could follow along with the clock updates and all getting ready for the start.
Today –Candi talked about all the activities---gave some idea of how to get to the Fair Grounds—and once you got there—what to expect. It is a special year—a day has been added—there is plenty of anticipation for the events---and we know that our residents and visitors will be joining us---as well as the news media providing some coverage.
Veterans Day on Thursday-----and vets get tickets to get in. Friday---we’ll be live from the Fairgrounds from 9 to 11---and look to engage again with the fun and the learning experiences people of all ages will see. A big crowd will be expected—weather support to be good----Saturday----is the Farmers Union lunch ---that costs those attending less than 50 cents—but would be $12 or so if you bought it over the counter. Food is key to agriculture in South Dakota and we appreciate what South Dakota Farmers Union---and the South Dakota Farm Bureau do for those in Ag---and the youngsters growing up. Both organizations are a part of the business we do on KELO-AM.
Congressman Dusty Johnson who will be at the Fairgrounds on Thursday—was on the road---sharing the importance of the Fair and the project he is working on today. Senators Thune and Rounds are expected to be in our show on Friday during the 9 or 10 hour.
We are always visiting with new AG experts like Rory Olerud—CEO of AP Select. He is working the crops in multi states----and with his experience he is setting up stories that are expected to provide success in the future. As we talked to him---we knew he had something special----and we wanted those in SD and neighboring states to get a chance to look for a good thing. We plan to follow along.
Brent Baloun---Plains Commerce Bank is a regular guest on Monday and Wednesday---they are the planners and we look for ways to introduce them to those with ag needs, business or individual families. We appreciate what they do—and how they do it.
Sarah Heinrich—had the morning Growing Harvest Network---we accept her as a friend even though she comes from KFGO Fargo. She that is our northern sister station.
Matt Swenson provided the morning commodities. The meat—the grain—the energy and yes the Big Board on Wall Street with Swenson Commodities.
Bryson Patterson—SBA of South Dakota was with us a second straight day at the Lincoln Covery Center---flooding help is available---and we are hearing they finally shut down those in Northwest Iowa—but just opened the one here. We know there are people hurting from the flooding. Congressman Dusty Johnson encouraged people to check in and see if there is help available.
We heard from Mike Smart—author of the Bucket Buddies Series—background in gardening, homeschooling his own kids and character design---aiming to inspire children and families to embrace eco friendly gardening. Building a Town Garden has a background in Ag –what he is doing and how people jump on—the book is live today—available at all major book stores thru Amazon and Barnes and Noble as well as available direct at Smart Farms Global.
He moved here from Washington State and his experience in Colton---shares there isn’t a grocery store there---he is trying to give people a chance to visit and find a way to grow their own food indoors. Sounds like fun and there are a lot of Colton communities around South Dakota.
For 3 and a half years we have been following Alla—who moved here from Ukraine----she is doing all she can to help those who have moved here –find jobs and opportunities to contribute in South Dakota. She was working with a Kiwanis Club last week in her flower business…..and is able to talk with us about what is happening on the international stage---in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
We closed the show with South Dakota State Climatologist Laura Edwards. She was with us in Mitchell at Dakotafest—and this week she’ll be at the State Fair on Friday in Huron. We’ll visit with her---and look at what she sees for September ahead.
Norm Anderson will post the show as a podcast for the August 28, 2024 10-11 show----use these notes as a guideline to what is in the show and where to find it.
