Blog-April 17, 2024-`10-11----It’s Your Agri Business
Agriculture—is the #1 Industry in South Dakota---and yes it deserves its own show 10-11—each week-day.
In this show---Geri Eide---FFA South Dakota—helped us bring all the pieces parts together----for the Annual FFA Convention that opened on this day at SDSU.
We have featured FFA members—and Geri since Monday ---Thursday I’ll be there in the afternoon to meet some of the 2100 members and perhaps even see if we can have some of them get involved with “My Little Country Town” nominations. I can’t wait----I have worked with Geri in the past at a couple of events at SDSU---State Fairs—and most recently at the National Farmers Union Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Today’s guest Haley Kizer—is from Howard---Star Ag----Officer Candidate—and some one you could tell loved—her little country town.
FFA is a big part of our future----and we’ll continue to follow this week and yes beyond.
We visited with Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig---among our topics
Spring planting underway in Iowa—but weather has some planters parked
E-15—The Secretary sent a letter to EPA asking for an emergency waiver—with the hopes it can happen soon
We talked about the end of the Iowa Legislative Session—budget season—looking to see if the Legislature will provide Iowans requests for foreign animal disease preparedness—renewable fuels, infrastructure, water quality and soil conservation funding
Coming Thursday—the Secretary will announce 20 chosen Iowa Dairy Innovation grants—trying to keep the dairy sector healthy and work to provide resources to expand dairy processing and more labor saving technology.
Started the 2nd segment with Brent Baloun---Plains Commerce Bank----we talked about PLANNING---for ag, for business, the young, the old----and how they are able to help by just paying attention and treating customers as they should as important commodities.
From Fargo—Sarah Heinrich—KFGO had the Greater Harvest Network---and after the half-time break---Matt Swenson---Swenson Commodities-gave us a look at the morning numbers-the grain—the energy—the meat and what the Big Board on Wall Street was doing.
Right behind—Minnesota Ag Commissioner Thom Peterson---yes the weather—the planting and what the legislature in this big state is doing.
As you might gather—just like Iowa and South Dakota--- Minnesota is concerned about the Bird Flu—yes the Dairy Flu----and they seem to be escaping. But they most certainly are watching their borders.
E-15 Fuels need some attention—yes and letters are being written—the waivers sought---and help need for a TRADE BILL as well.
As we always do with Commissioner Peterson—we close our interview talking about “stress” in agriculture---what we can do with it-----and really what our neighbors in South Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota—Wisconsin should know as well.
She was new (as I remember) to our sow—but we had an interesting conversation with Leacey Brown—SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialists.
Leacey is encouraging adults of all ages to discuss advance care planning with their family and friends----and complete ADVANCE DIRECTIVES.
What is being done is filling out an advance directive form—allowing you to provide instructions about your health care or appoint someone to make medical treatment decisions for you when you really cannot speak for yourself
In essence: Type of health care decisions, withholding or withdrawing treatment, nutrition for persons in a permanent vegetive state, issues of brain death and organ  donations.
Among the conversations that should come up:
     Spirituality
     Religion
     Aid in dying
--------------Leacey willing ----we will try to keep her on the air with us at least once a month-to help our listeners help themselves and their families.
A big event this Friday at 12:30 at Central Church in Sioux Falls. God as CEO. 700 tickets sold already---Tony Dungy and Managing Parter of True North with Brian Slipka—the Canaries Owner.
Ross Reitsma joined us---he talked with us about the event—the Kingdom Capital Fund—a nonprofit that aims to significantly increase resources by brining people together to creatively multiple their time, talent and treasures to make a difference –we talked about who should come to the event—and that it was Mayor Paul TenHaken who got this started.
We closed the hour with Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan. Tuesday we talked with South Dakota State Climatologist Laura Edwards----good stuff---weather updates---and people that make such a difference watching the weather and then talking about it with us.
