But the past few years have seen Zoe confronted with grief after the sudden and tragic passing of her father. Zoe was on a remote island in Japan when the accident happened, and in an instant the person she says was her most trusted confidante, who she turned to for guidance in everything, was gone.

In this episode, we talk about how when you are confronted with that level of grief, you realise that death, and darkness, are essential in life in order to know happiness and love. And realising this, can shape your entire world view.

Zoe Klein on facing grief, seeking happiness, and jumping out of planes

We all know the name Layne Beachley. She has legend status. 

I’ve known Layne since she was 5. We grew up in the same neighbourhood, I was mates with her older brother, and I remember her paddling out in the surf as a little kid. We called her gidget. 

We’ve caught up from time to time over the years, but like most people, I’ve watched her journey to greatness from afar.

Most are aware of Layne’s success: her seven world titles, the only surfer male or female to win six of them consecutively - but what happens after you are named the best in the world? And what kind of person has the drive and ambition to face a 50 foot wave?

During this conversation, we get into how her drive to be the best wasn’t just your typical ambition. How in fact, it was where she came from - losing her mother at 5, and finding out she was adopted at 8, that fed a deep hunger to prove to herself, and to everyone else, that she was worthy of love. 

Layne talks about how retiring meant losing her sense of identity. And how she has gone through a rebirthing.

The memory that haunts Layne Beachley

At the age of 29, Charlotte Ree was married, with a successful career in publishing. But deep down, she knew she wasn’t happy. 

So, as Charlotte says, she put a bomb under her life. She left her marriage and moved into a new house on her own. Two days later, the world went into lockdown. 

During lockdown Charlotte started making what she called Single Lady Dinners - extravagant, labour intensive, four course meals, just for herself. It started a bit of a movement. One of self love. 

In doing so, Charlotte, someone who had always sought the approval of others in catering for and to them, discovered that she was worthy of loving herself.

Gemma Watts thought she had nailed her work/life balance. 

Being her own boss, as the editor of Glow Journal, podcast host, MC, and a trusted authority on all things beauty on social media and as youtime’s beauty expert, Gemma believed that she had implemented healthy boundaries, routine and work load.

Until, she didn’t. At the end of last year, her body forced her to acknowledge that she wasn’t prioritising her own needs when she ended up on bedrest, suffering from burnout.

In this episode, Gemma and I discuss how having a presence on social media, it is easy to fall into the ‘hustle’ mentality, of being reachable all of the time. 

And she says that no matter how successful she became, there has often been a small voice in her head, feeding a fear of what opportunities could pass her by while she was offline.

But Allira Potter is on a mission to democratise the space, to teach us that tuning into your inner knowing and intuition is achievable for all of us, if we just pause, and pay attention.

Allira welcomed me into her home in Geelong to talk about how she went from working in the corporate world, partying hard, and as she says “falling into a heap” with depression and anxiety to where she is today.

Picking up a pack of Oracle cards left to her by her mother, led to Allira forging a completely new path for herself as a manifestation and spiritual coach, and now author.

She also talks about how it feels to be a part of the movement to undo the whitewashing of the wellness industry - and how her Aboriginal culture is integral in everything she does.

But as we learned in our conversation, Nadia found peace in sitting still the past two years when the parties were cancelled and we all stayed home.
