Ex-cop turned defence lawyer Patrick Schmidt reveals the brutal reality of defending the guilty - and why cops hate lawyers.

Ex-cop turned defence lawyer Patrick Schmidt reveals the brutal reality of defending the guilty - and why cops hate lawyers.

Gary goes head-to-head with Patrick on going to the dark side, how the worst police investigation he ever saw changed how he defends clients, and the courtroom tactics that get police destroyed on the stand.

From standard operating procedures that aren't law, to where he draws the ethical line when he believes someone did it, this is cops vs lawyers at its rawest.

Former police prosecutor turned defence solicitor Patrick Schmidt sits down with Gary to reveal what really happens when police face a good defence lawyer in court and why so many officers struggle in the witness box.

With 8 years as a police prosecutor and now defending clients full-time, Patrick has seen both sides. He breaks down how defence lawyers pick apart police evidence, why arrogance and emotion get officers into trouble, and why preparation is everything when you take the stand.

Glen McEwen, AFP's Asia Commander, reveals the Thai cave rescue's tensest moments, Yemen deployment & a corrupt cop probe

After Bali, Glen McEwen became the AFP's Asia Commander and found himself at the centre of the Thai cave rescue .

Gary sits down with Glen to hear what it was really like inside that cave rescue, 10 days with no food or air, Australian divers in the water, the high-risk sedation plan to swim the boys out, the moment they thought they'd lost the first kid, and the Hollywood moment when the pumps failed with rescuers still inside.

Glen also opens up on his deployment to Yemen interviewing Australians jailed for alleged gun-running, leading the covert investigation into corrupt officer Mark Standen while working alongside him, and the personal toll of 35 years policing that led to medical retirement and his ongoing recovery through therapy and EMDR.

Then AFP officer Glen McEwen was 400m from Paddy's Bar when the Bali Bombings hit. Hear his first-hand account of the chaos, rescue efforts and aftermath.

On October 12, 2002, then Australian Federal Police Acting Superintendent Glen McEwen was just 400 metres from Paddy's Bar by chance when the Bali Bombings happened. He ran toward the blast and became the first Aussie cop on scene.

In Part 1 of this interview, Gary sits down with Glen to hear what it was like inside those first chaotic hours, helping the injured, making the first call back to Australia to report mass Australian casualties, forming 'Team Australia' at the Consulate, and returning at first light to help secure the crime scene for the investigation that followed.

Glen also shares how his posting to Indonesia led him there, from infiltrating people-smuggling networks to his earlier work on the massive 397kg Port Macquarie seizure in 1998.

Ashton Kline shares how he lost his mother to family violence at 15, his promise to protect his brother Grant, and his path to healing with Gary Jubelin.

After Ashton Kline's mother Viola was murdered by his dad after decades of abuse, he faced a choice "Do I let it destroy me?"

In Part 2, Ashton sits down with Gary to share what came after, the unbreakable bond with his younger brother Grant, being taken into foster care with their belongings in a garbage bag, and going from family to family.

Ashton talks about the red flags that were missed in the build-up, learning to carry trauma rather than be defined by it, building a toolkit for recovery, and why he and Grant chose not just to survive, but to thrive.

For Ashton, it's about carrying his mum's memory forward, so her loss is not in vain, and using their story to help others understand the impact of domestic violence and homicide.

Surviving the aftermath of his mum's murder: Ashton Kline Pt. 2

Ashton Kline shares with Gary Jubelin the harrowing story of his mother's murder at 15, becoming his brother's guardian overnight, and finding purpose through survival and brotherhood.

When Ashton Kline was 15, his mother Viola was murdered by his father.

Ashton sits down with Gary Jubelin to share what led up to that day on the 27th of September, 2000, growing up walking on eggshells, the brief nine months of peace after his father left, and how in a single afternoon he had to step into an adult role to look after his chronically ill six year old brother Grant.

He talks about the promise he made to his mum: "No matter what, I will always look after Grant". Building his own toolkit for recovery from trauma, and why sharing their story now gives purpose to his mum's loss.

This is Ashton's story of survival, brotherhood, and responsibility beyond his years.

Tim Smith's final border run ends in capture, 36 charges and up to 113 years, but prison's real cost was learning his mum had died and been buried without him.

The $100K-a-day runs are over.In Part 2, former helicopter pilot Tim Smith sits down with Gary Jubelin for what happened after the ground crew came under investigation and led straight to him.

Tim breaks down his final border run, clearing the trees by two feet at 100 miles an hour, not realising he’d been spotted from above and the moment on landing: “Mr. Smith, we’ve been waiting for you for quite a while. Welcome to the United States.”

From there the fall is fast: told he was facing a minimum of 87 years and a maximum of 113 years, hit with 36 counts, and a first night in US custody he describes as sheer terror.

And the real cost wasn’t the sentence. While locked up, Tim learns his mum had been dead two weeks and already buried, then gets the news about his brother David

US federal prison, the final drug run & the price of freedom: Tim Smith Pt. 2

Before Married at First Sight, Tim Smith smuggled $100K in marijuana per helicopter run across the US/Canada border, until prison and devastating loss changed everything.

Tim Smith is best known as a groom on season 11 of Married at First Sight Australia, but that's arguably the least interesting chapter of his story. Nearly two decades earlier, he was flying helicopter loads of marijuana across the Canada/US border, pulling off at least 20 runs and pocketing around $100,000 a trip.

It was a wild ride that couldn't last. When it all came crashing down, Tim found himself behind bars in a maximum-security US federal prison for over a year. But the real punishment began after his release, when he lost both his mum and his brother while he was locked up, powerless to be there.

QLD dog handler David Raymond reveals how Vader caught 7 fugitives in one night and helped stop a criminal fleeing in a moving 4WD

Vader was Australia's most fearless police dog. This is his story.

In Part 2 of I Catch Killers, Gary Jubelin sits back down with retired Queensland dog handler David Raymond, who spent 36 years in the job, 26 years in the Dog Squad

Vader tracked offenders for 3-4 hours through dense cane fields, found 7 fugitives hiding in one night when no human team could, and once held onto a wanted criminal by the thigh while David punched the driver through the window of a moving 4WD to stop him.

David also breaks down the jobs that didn't go to plan, ramming the wrong red Holden ute while chasing an armed hold-up offender 80km south of Cairns, and arriving at a bloody scene that looked like a murder but wasn't, plus what the harness, booties, and heat management really mean for dog welfare, why a dog can sense fear and adrenaline before a handler can see it.
