September 16 is the celebration of Mexico's Independence Day, when leaders re-enact the historic 1810 cry for independence made by Miguel Hidalgo (1753-1811), a Mexican Catholic priest and prominent leader of the Mexican War of Independence, who is recognized as the Father of the Nation — then, streets fill with the festive colors green, white, and red, accompanied by fireworks, music, and traditional food.
