The wide-variety of organisms that formed on the North American continent, later evolved into the present myriad of life-forms that inhabit this corner of the world. During the mid-nineteenth century an English scientist put forth an explanation for our planet’s diversity of life—a fascinating theory of evolution that shook the Victorian Age to its core and still reverberates to this day. 1859 witnessed the seminal publication of «On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life» by Charles Robert Darwin. International Darwin Day is celebrated annually on February 12th (the birthday of Charles Darwin, 1809-82) to commemorate his foundational contributions to science, particularly the theory of evolution by natural selection, and to honor the "Father of Evolution" for transforming the understanding of life and the interconnectedness of species.

Native communities in southeastern Canada and northern New York State warred amongst themselves long before the arrival of Europeans on the continent. By the early 17th century, new alliances were formed and the Iroquois became mortal enemies of the French. E202.

Codex 4.6 Common Sense by Thomas Paine

During the summer of 1609, Samuel de Champlain attempted to form better relations and alliances with the local First Nations tribes including Wendat-Hurons, Algonquins, and Montagnais who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River. These tribes sought Champlain's help in their war against the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, League or Five Nations. The founder of New France set off with his men to explore the Rivière des Iroquois—now known as the Richelieu River—and became the first known European to lay eyes on and map one of the continent’s majestic bodies of water, named Lake Champlain in his honor. E201.
