Herodotus (484-425 BC) traveled widely in the ancient Greek world and wrote down what he saw and the stories he heard. He coined the word history, which is Greek for "inquiries." Do modern historians of North America owe a debt of gratitude to Herodotus, widely credited as being the First Historian?
