Guest: Simphiwe Masilo | Programme Coordinator at Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA)

Africa Melane speaks to Simphiwe Masilo, Programme Coordinator at the Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA), about South Africa’s proposed front-of-pack warning labels for food products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat. With the draft regulations under consideration since April 2023, HEALA is urging the Minister of Health to approve them by 10 December 2026. We unpack why the labels matter, what has delayed their introduction, whether the deadline is achievable and how clearer food labelling could empower consumers to make informed choices while helping address South Africa’s growing burden of diet-related diseases.
