The Fitness & Wellness Reset: Your injury may have started before you felt pain

View descriptionShare

What if the sore knee, troublesome calf or recurring back pain isn't simply about the place that hurts? When an injury appears, we naturally search for one culprit: the run, the shoes, the gym session, the awkward movement or that final interval. But injuries can be considerably more complicated. Fitness presenter, wellness correspondent and burnout & mental fitness coach Liezel van der Westhuizen joins Africa Melane on CapeTalk and Talk Radio 702 to unpack why injuries can emerge from a combination of physical load, recovery, physiological factors and psychological stress rather than one easily identifiable event. The discussion builds on physiotherapist and kinesiologist Adrian Stevens’ central message that when trying to understand an injury, “it’s never just one thing.” Liezel explains why the painful moment can sometimes be the final chapter of a much longer story. Changes in training volume or intensity, repetitive loading, previous injury, insufficient recovery, sleep, nutrition and hydration may all deserve consideration when investigating why an active person has developed a problem. The original guide also highlights psychological stress as part of its wider injury framework, arguing that mental and emotional pressure can produce physical responses and influence how we hold and move our bodies. The feature also tackles the increasingly popular conversation around fascia, what the science actually tells us about this connective tissue, and why listeners should be cautious of claims that blame every unexplained ache on “tight fascia.” Most importantly, Liezel explains why repeatedly treating only the painful spot may sometimes overlook the wider factors contributing to the problem. For anyone who has ever said, “But I was fine yesterday, so why am I injured today?”, this is an important rethink of pain, training and recovery. Your body doesn't necessarily start the story when it finally gets your attention
