DMV Spotlight on 3-15-26 shines a light on the massive raw sewage spill that occurred on January 19th this year following a pipe collapse. Guest, Betsy Nicholas, Head of the Potomac River Keeper Network (PRKN) says the amount of raw sewage initially listed at 200 million gallons is suspected to be even more than that amount. Nicholas also credits DC Water for its work to fix the pipe amid DC’s sub-freezing temperatures at the time of the initial leak but she expresses concern about the need for on-going testing for e-coli and other contaminants in the Potomac and its tributaries. Nicholas also revealed the PRKN did uncover ongoing contamination at the diversion site of the original spill into the C and O canal near Lock 10. Nicholas is advocating for continued testing of water quality in the Potomac River.
