Hitterz Collective: How Papa Kobina Is Using Dance To Build Community and Culture in Madison

For nearly a decade, Anesis Therapy has worked to make mental health care more accessible, culturally responsive and connected to the communities it serves throughout Madison, Dane County and Wisconsin.

As Anesis prepares to celebrate its 10 year anniversary, founder Myra joined DJ Fusion for Community & Culture: Inside Out on 93.1 JAMZ to talk about the growth of the organization, the importance of representation in mental health care and how the community can support its next chapter.

Mental Health Care That Reflects the Community

Anesis Therapy was founded in Madison in 2016 with a focus on providing outpatient mental health services while creating an environment where clients can feel understood.

While Anesis serves people from all backgrounds, the organization specializes in serving Black and Brown communities in Dane County and across Wisconsin. Its team of clinicians and case managers reflects many of the communities they work with.

That representation can make an important difference when someone is seeking therapy.

Culture, family experiences and community can all shape a person's life and mental health. Working with a therapist who already understands some of those cultural experiences can allow clients to spend less time explaining their background and more time focusing on why they came to therapy in the first place.

Therapy Services for Individuals, Children, Families and Couples

Anesis provides outpatient mental health services for people dealing with a wide range of needs, including depression and anxiety.

The organization works with:
Adults
Children
Families
Couples

Clients can also review clinician biographies to find a therapist who may be a good match for their individual needs and experiences.

Anesis currently serves the Madison community through multiple locations, including its west side location near Schroeder Road and Forward Drive, a satellite location on University Avenue and a drop in clinic at Mount Zion.

Virtual therapy appointments are also available, providing another option for people who may have difficulty getting away from work, finding transportation or making it to an office during traditional business hours.

Some clinicians offer appointments as early as 7 a.m. or as late as 7 p.m., helping Anesis meet clients where they are.

From One Clinician to a Team of Around 60

When Myra started Anesis Therapy in 2016, she was the only person at the clinic.

Ten years later, the organization has grown to a team of around 60 clinicians, case managers and staff members serving the community.

That growth has also led to the creation of a nonprofit arm supporting services that don't always fit within traditional insurance models.

Among those efforts are free drop in mental health clinics and other community based services designed to remove barriers to receiving support.

Now Anesis is celebrating how far it has come while raising money to continue that work.

The community is invited to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Anesis Therapy on Friday, September 18, 2026, with a special luncheon in Madison.

The event will celebrate a decade of service while giving attendees an opportunity to learn more about Anesis, its impact and where the organization is headed next.

The luncheon will also serve as a fundraiser supporting the organization's nonprofit work, including programs and mental health services that cannot traditionally be billed through insurance.

Community members can support Anesis by attending the luncheon, becoming an event sponsor or making a donation.

Supporting a Black Owned Business Making an Impact in Madison

For Myra, being a Black business owner is about more than operating a successful organization.

It's about community, responsibility and creating opportunities for others.

During her conversation with DJ Fusion, she spoke about the pride and joy that comes with building Anesis, but also the responsibility she feels to the people the organization serves.

The impact extends beyond mental health services. Seeing a Black woman build and lead a successful Madison organization can also provide an example for young Black girls who are beginning to imagine what they can accomplish themselves.

On 93.1 JAMZ Community and Culture Inside Out, DJ Fusion talked with Sarah, the owner of Crash Box Therapy, Fitchburg’s new destination for people who need a real, physical release. The concept is simple and powerful. You can book a session to safely smash glassware and select items, or step into a paint splatter room and let creativity do the heavy lifting.

Crash Box Therapy was created for the moments when life feels heavy and you need a place to put that energy. Sarah comes from a wellness background through her other business, Earthly Temptations, where she offers sound baths, meditation, and relaxation experiences. After sessions, clients kept saying the same thing. They felt calm, but they still needed a place to smash something. That request sparked the idea, and Sarah found a gap in the Madison area. There was no dedicated smash space here, so she built one.

Crash Box Therapy is designed around safety and structure. Guests get suited up with protective gear including a painter suit, helmet, and eye protection. Everyone signs a waiver, then learns safe swinging and throwing methods before starting. It keeps the experience fun, purposeful, and controlled.

The business also solves a big problem. People do break things when they are stressed, but it usually happens in the wrong place at the wrong time, with big consequences. Crash Box Therapy creates a safer alternative where the release is intentional and the environment is built for it.

Not everyone wants to break things, which is why the paint therapy room exists. The paint splatter room is open to ages eight and up and can fit up to seven people, making it a strong option for family fun, birthday parties, and group celebrations.

For the smashing experience, the age limit starts at 15 and up. Appointments are required, not walk ins, because each session needs to be prepared with the right items and safety setup.

Crash Box Therapy is located at 319 West Beltline Highway in Fitchburg, right off the Beltline near Easy Pawn and Pitcher’s Pub. It is accessible for entry with wide doors and a ramp, and the team is ready to help clients as needed.

They also host special events that bring different audiences into the space, including work stress nights, ladies focused nights, and smash plus sound bath sessions that combine physical release with a calming wind down. Looking ahead, they plan to expand events, increase corporate bookings, and introduce glow in the dark paint options for the paint therapy room.

They accept small electronics and appliances too, but do not take laptops or computers because batteries can be hazardous when smashed. D’GEMC is not just a name. It stands for Dedication, Gratitude, Excellence, Maturity, and Character. The brand was officially launched in 2022, but the grind behind it stretches back nearly eight years. What started as pressing shirts at home and selling pieces at local venues has now evolved into a fully produced designer level clothing collection.

Premium denim jeans with custom logo buttons and stitched branding


High quality leather pullover


Two jogger sets including zip up and pullover styles


Crew tees and polo tees

Drew explained that much of his inspiration came from travel, family, and especially his son. While building his career as a local music artist, he wore his own designs on stage as promotion. Over time, the fashion side began to gain more traction. Instead of chasing short term moves, he made a long term investment into building a sustainable brand.
